Kidney stones

Has anyone had them? What does it feel like?

I have had three episodes in the last two days of sudden, intense pain in my left side radiating down into my abdomen. I felt like I had a UTI before that.

The pain is like Labour. Really intense sort of cramping. I vomited and had to curl up on the floor rocking.

In between times I have felt fine apart from the UTI symptoms.

I called 111 yesterday evening in the midst of an attack. They sent me to out of hours, who sent me to A&E saying they suspected kidney stones.

When I got there they said they were so busy that if it wasn't immediately life threatening, I should go home and go back tomorrow.

I have slept ok. There is no pain right now and it just feels quite dramatic to me to rock up at A&E basically feeling fine. My temp is normal.

I don't know what to do today. Should I go? Or GP? I don't want to waste anyone's time.

I’ve had a kidney stone recently, about two months ago now.
It is normal for the pain to come and go, that’s what happened to me. I was also throwing up, it’s really horrible! I’ve never given birth, so can’t compare the pain personally, but I did read that it was comparable to labour.
When I went to A&E I was there for a while whilst they did tests (blood test, urine sample) and then I got told to come back in a few hours, when they gave me a CT scan. The scan confirmed the kidney stone.
Given that the pain does come and go, it’s worth going to A&E again, just to confirm either way.

Thank you, toffee. That is so helpful. It is horrible, isn't it?

I just feel a bit of a fraud rocking up feeling fine, but I can't really go about my day if I'm going to have another episode and end up on the floor in the middle of a meeting!

I suppose I would have to go in for the tests anyway, so I may just have to write today off and go and sit in the hospital. Judging by how bad it was last night, it will be a loooooong day.
