Cervical ectropion- seen during smear

Had a smear this morning - nurse mentioned she could see the above . Told me it’s common but now I have googled it and panicked myself is this a sign of pre cancerous cells ?

It's fine OP. It is usually only noted when you have a smear, it can cause a bit of spotting post smear, but there is rarely a sinister sequalae associated with cervical ectropion. It's just a bit on the inner cervix turning itself inside out. What did the nurse say?

They are categorically nothing to do with cancer whatsoever. It's part of the uterus lining poking out, usually associated with having been on the contraceptive pill now or in the past. One was seen at my smear in February, I got a letter saying all cells fine.

Thank you 😊 she just said I can see some ectropian in the cervix and it bleed a little . It was a routine smear so no symptoms of anything . She wrote it down for me but said don’t google !

I had this. It started in pregnancy (hormone induced) causing lots of bleeding all the way through then didn't go away afterwards. After bleeding mid cycle and two failed attempts at my next smear test (they couldn't analyse the sample as the blood had ruined it) I got it cauterised as an outpatient and it's all better now; my next smear test was easy, no more mid cycle bleeding and I only bled a tiny bit in my next pregnancy. If it doesn't cause you any issues you probably won't need any treatment.

This exact thing happened to me during smear 2 years ago. She told me it bled a little and that she could see ectopian. I was worried sick, especially after a googled. Anyway, results were all normal.
I really wish the nurse wouldn't say things like that, especially as I have health anxiety as it is!

Ahbump · 30/04/2021 19:47

@largeginforme that is exactly what she said to me then told me not to google . Ha google is one thing I always do .

I also had an abdominal ultrasound later in the day for a separate thing and the technician said your results will be with your doctor in 10 mins this panicked me to . It usually takes day . Lucky the secretary took pity on me and got my results and said it was just because the scanner could report themselves! :-/

Hey ,

Was anyone referred for further investigation after a ectropian was noticed ? Mine was noticed at a cervical screening 6 years ago , results were clear .
Then the two cervical screenings after that were fine too. One which was just few months ago. Nurse said ectropian was there still .
I ask as I've read a few ppl have been referred to hospital to check out of its anything more sinister . But I assumed if cervical screenings were clear I've no need to worry ? Just wanted some other people's thoughts . If you have any 🤣.

Thank you so much for replying.
I honestly have not really given mine a second thought all these years as I just trusted my GP . After the nurse saw it at a smear , it did worry me and I booked to see GP , who had a look and swabbed for infection ( clear ) and said that yep I have ectropian and as it causes me no symptoms I could just leave it . Which I did.( 6 years ago) At both smears since, a nurse will always comment on how really red my cervix is , but my results have come back clear .
I was reading something on here the other day and someone said that their GP sent them to the hospital urgent referral, just to make sure it WAS ectropian. I never got sent to the hospital . Reading that they were, made me start worrying ! About something that honestly I didn't even think about .

Also most people's I've read about have disappeared. So it is ok that mines still here after all these years ?

@Wearywithteens
Did a GP diagnose yours or were you referred to a specialist?
