Propranolol for migraines?

Babymumma18 · 21/04/2021 13:27

Hey everyone,

I have suffered with migraines since I was 18, I am now 24. I used to be on Amitriptyline and they worked very well for me.

I had to come off this as I fell pregnant and the risks were too high for me to continue taking if I wasn't getting migraines anymore.

Since having baby (4 months old now), in the last month I've had 4 migraines, I asked the doctor to go back on Amitriptyline three weeks ago. The aura is getting worse, I go partially blind in my eyes and extremely fuzzy headed. Yesterday I woke up and felt drunk I was so dizzy from my migraine on Sunday! Still going today. I used to only get migraines for 2 days max.

I called today and said the treatment isn't working as the migraines just seem to get worse each time. They've put me on Propranolol, can I have good and bad stories on this treatment please?

Would be great to hear what people think before I start this. Doctor has said if this doesn't work, I'll go back on Amitriptyline but a higher dose.

I was put on propranaolol a few months ago
for migraine. I've not had a single migraine since. It is also helping my anxiety.

igotdemons · 21/04/2021 21:30

I’ve taken propranolol for migraines but unfortunately it didn’t work for me (is fab for anxiety though, really chills me out!). I took amitriptyline for a few weeks for nerve pain but didn’t have one headache or migraine whilst I was on it! Was brilliant (although couldn’t cope with the dry mouth, that was awful 😣). Hope it works for you, OP.

SnargaluffPod · 21/04/2021 21:33

Works amazingly for my migraines. Been on it for years now!

Embracelife · 21/04/2021 21:35

Worked for dd for a few years
Then did not work any more

FieryWill · 21/04/2021 21:40

Propranolol have changed my life, stopped migraines and reduced my almost daily headaches to the odd one around time of the month.

kerosene20 · 21/04/2021 21:43

I have been on them for a few years now, virtually no migraines since! Life changing.

Babymumma18 · 21/04/2021 22:12

Wow, thanks everyone this gives me high hopes!!

Has anyone experienced trouble sleeping as I can see this is a side effect? Amitriptyline can also be used as a sleeping tablet which for me is an added bonus so got worried when I saw this as a side effect?

I take it and find it does has a sedative effect at night if I take 2. Also has helped my anxiety enormously 🙏🏻
I also suffered from hormonal migraines before hysterectomy a couple of years ago. Was prescribed amytriptyline however I hated the weight gain 🤬

Ellenthegenerous · 21/04/2021 22:27

I have been taking Candesartan as a preventative for migraines for about 2 years now. If the propanolol doesn’t suit you, it’s worth asking your GP about candesartan. Good luck, migraines are bloody miserable, as you well know.

ihatemessyplay · 22/04/2021 03:34

Does the propanol cause weight gain? I've just been prescribed it too op, fingers crossed for both of us!

TravelDreamLife · 22/04/2021 03:57

My doc wants me to go on Amitriptyline. I'm terrified of weight gain as I struggle with my weight already. I've read mixed reports. Did it make anyone gain weight?

Lovelovelove21 · 22/04/2021 12:04

This! I have also been on propranolol since last November. It was the best thing ever. My migraines were horrendous. I was literally lying in a dark room all day with the pain. Propranolol has been a life saver. I've probably had 3 maybe 4 migraines ( but not as ever severe as they used to be) since November and that is usually when I've forgotten to the tablets for a day or two. Propranolol also helps with anxiety which is a great feeling not have that stressful feeling anymore.

See I've put on a lot of weight with Propranolol as well but my doctor has assured me that it is nothing to do with the Propranalol.

I have put on 2 stone since November. The doctor says that Propranolol has not contributed to this and that basically it is Lockdown eating etc
zippityzip · 22/04/2021 12:08

Propranolol changed my life. Didn't have a single migraine and I was chilled as hell, no anxiety.
I was on 40mg twice a day and never gained weight.

FelicityPike · 22/04/2021 12:22

I highly recommend it as well. Dramatically reduced the number of migraines I get.
I couldn’t handle Amitriptyline at all, spaced me out and scared the heck out of me and DH when he saw me on it.

Babymumma18 · 22/04/2021 12:36

Anybody else put on weight on Propranolol?

Weight gain is also a side effect of Amitriptyline but I never had an issue when on this.

I really don't want to be gaining weight after just losing my baby weight ConfusedSmile

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/04/2021 15:12

I have lost weight since being on it - probably because I feel better and am not consoling myself with chocolate.

I've had no trouble sleeping either.

Babymumma18 · 22/04/2021 20:56

Thanks so much everyone.

I got the tablets today and just took my first one so fingers crossed as I've had a migraine since Sunday!!

When do you all take yours? Before bed?

OP posts:
FelicityPike · 22/04/2021 20:59

First thing in the morning for me.

TaraRhu · 22/04/2021 20:59

I tried it and it gave me horrendous nightmares. More like terrors! Amitrypteline worked much better.

Would recommend you try it though as everyone reacts differently.

Whenasuitcasejustwontdo · 22/04/2021 21:08

I take this too. 160mg slow release at night, as I kept forgetting to take it in the morning. It has really changed my life-I still have migraines but just one every month or two instead of almost a constant one. The only side effect I have is being cold but much preferable to a migraine! I have gained weight but am putting it down to lockdown!

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 22/04/2021 21:08

I felt a bit woozy for a few days and quickly got used to it. I also take Sumitriptan for attacks. However, I have not had a really full-on vomiting migraine where I wanted to die since I started taking it. I still get hormonal migraines but the severity has massively reduced. I think it’s seen off the stress-related ones and the two medications has stopped the uncontrollable vomiting too.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 22/04/2021 21:11

I went from weekly migraines and almost permanent headache to approx 2 migraines per year and rare headaches thanks to propranolol. Also helps my anxiety, although Its still awful. It's my miracle drug!

Blackopal · 22/04/2021 21:16

I take amitriptyline daily which helps alot.

I was also put onto 80 mg propranolol daily for another issue. I liked it alot, however, after taking for five weeks I lost a huge amount of my hair. Over space of around two weeks around half my hair fell out. Doctor confirmed it can cause hair loss and if you Google you will see similar stories to mine.
Obviously it's luck if you suffer this side effect or not, hopefully won't happen to you.
