Corrective surgery for squint late in life

Has anyone had this, and was it effective?
I’ve had a squint all my life and it has really impacted on my confidence. Just wondering if advances in medical science mean that this is an option.
Also - and be honest! - are you uncomfortable when you’re having a conversation with someone with an obvious squint?
