My cousins just had her first baby, a little girl and she was due to come home today, however, Dr's have told her that her baby has developed a strep infection and they have put her on antibiotics and she has to stay in another 48 hours, if the infection is still present then, she has to stay in and continue treatment. They are all quite worried and of course my cousin is feeling very stressed and overwhelmed by it all, with baby being her fist child she and her husband are already feeling very nervous! How serious is something like this? do they have cause for concern or is it one of those things? any help advice would be appreciated! TIA x

Hi QofV

when my DS2 was about 10 days old he was admitted to hospital because he had an eye infection, jaundice and a groin infection.

They took a swab and they told us that he had streptococcus pneumonaie in his eye, and in his groin staph aureus.

He was admitted into hospital for 2 days for intravenous antibiotics. After 48 hours, they told us he would be safer at home so they discharged him and he was given oral a/b for another week or so.

He's eleven months old now, but he is having on-going health problems (delayed visual maturation, hearing problems, development issues). Noone can tell us if his problems are related to his early infections.

All the best to your cousin, her DH, and the new baby, it is such a worrying time.
