I gave up smoking 12 days ago (Horaaaaaaaaaaaaay ), and already i have put a couple of pounds on.
Yes i know half a stone is better than cancer, but what are other peoples exp. of weight issues following giving up the weed.

I know i should just not stuff but just yest when i made a cuppa i cut a piece of cake to go with it !
I would never had done that during the day when i smoked.
My collegue then totally depressed me by telling me she put on a stone and kept it on when she gave up !
x

yes it does happen but it is easier to break the habit of having too many snacks than it is is to break the habit of smoking.

if you think you will put on weight, that i is a fait acomplie, it will become a self fulfilling prophecy.

try taking up some other short term indulgence instead, like, i dunno, going ofr facials or getting a pet or whatever floats your boat really.

you are replacing bthe constant craving for fags with another indulgence, but it doesnt have to be food. and if it does, then it certainly doesnt have to be cake! there must be some utterly delicious foods you like which wont pile on the pounds? i like exotic salads for eg. the dressings aint great but the bulk is fresh leaves and veg. cant say fairer than that.

I gave up smoking using an inhaler and didn't put any weight on at all. I expect it helped me with the something-to-do-with-my-mouth factor. Can you not find something to suck on for those all important after coffee/after dinner/on the phone/whatever moments?

For the hunger pangs aspect try wholemeal crackers or nuts and dried fruit. It might be an idea trying to follow a GI diet style approach for a couple of weeks until your blood sugar settles down as you withdraw from the nicotine.

I also found that when I stopped smoking I had all this nervous energy to burn off so tried to make the most of it by doing extra boxing classes at the gym or whatever. I hasten to add that I was childless at the time so appreciate that this may not be possible at the moment. Perhaps try walking instead of driving if poss, shopping "briskly", vigourous spring cleaning etc.

I gave up smoking and took up running. Lost weight and kept it off.

puppydavies · 09/11/2007 10:26

i put on about 10lbs iirc. i think i unwittingly used the fags as an appetite suppressant - i'd have a coffee and a smoke for breakfast for e.g.

but the weight i gained gave me the impetus to improve my diet and exercise in a way that you can't really properly commit to if you smoke iyswim (you can lose weight but not have a healthy lifestyle). i got super fit and lost the 10lbs and another 10 (and then i buggered it all up by getting pg again and eating lots of cake ).

I gave up on Monday. It is hard going. I am very conscious that I do not want to put weight on (having lost 2 stone with SW) so I am really trying hard not to snack and nibble on everything I should not. I am hoping to take up running soon in order to get fit and to carry on losing some weight. I am making myself drink lots and lots of water and eating fat free yogurts when the craving gets too much and also the Alpen light bars. I did weigh myself this morning and I have lost a 1lb, so my way is working for me.

Good luck fakeblonde and well done.
