High bilirubin levels

Hi i went for a FBC yesterday I also had a test on my liver and everything has come back normal except my bilirubin level it’s 30! And apparently they should be at 21.00umoI/L
Is this something I need to worry about doctor just put on the notes “ satisfactory” and to repeat them in 2 weeks time but never really explains anything to me said they can’t talk to me until Monday so now I’m left worrying about my liver
I know if it was something really bad then he would contact me but from what I’m reading and seeing on my blood form my levels are well over the Normal range 😕 has anyone had results like this before ?? If so what was the outcome I’ve got really bad health anxiety so this is not helping me at all feel so depressed after getting this result today and when I google comes up with all sort of scary things

It’s a bit high. How significant that is depends on why it was tested/what the GP things the problem is. FWIW there are some non-worrying causes of a slightly raised bili. Sounds like your GP’s on the case if they’ve suggested repeating it. Hope it all turns out well.

I’ve been having very irregular periods but that’s due to my pcos and the doctor requested for my liver to be checked he said today is strange as everything else has come back within the Normal range with my liver apart from that
Do you know what could be the cause sorry know your not a doctor but I may as well talk to myself when I speak to him
🙄x

My DH had this once and the whites of his eyes went yellow...then it just went away and we never had any explanation for it. He's fine now as far as we know, they never rechecked him after that so can't have been too concerned.

Loiis · 25/03/2021 22:05

Oh seriously I hope my eyes don’t go yellow 😪 I’m such a big worrier he said sometimes your levels can fluctuate but I feel like mine is just to high but yeah he has just put it down as satisfactory so strange glad your DH is okay now

It could be Gilbert syndrome, common and harmless. I have it and have abnormal bilirubin every blood test.

It sounds like the doctor thinks it is that if they have said no further investigation required.

It makes me feel a bit tired and crap when it flares up and I go a bit yellow but otherwise I'm fine

Loiis · 25/03/2021 22:10

Yeah he didn’t say it was that I seen that before when I was Googling 🤦🏻‍♀️ Which I should never do as I always diagnose myself with illnesses 😩🤦🏻‍♀️
It’s so strange though as the corner of my eyes have always been slightly yellow not the whole of my just the corners and I’ve always wondered why maybe this is why ? Thank you for replying x

There are about 15 measurements on an FBC and 6 on liver function. Sometimes they are out of range but are of no significance to your health.

This is one of the risks to doing blood tests, sometimes they create questions and in a lot of medicine there is no certainty.

I’d say not significant is a good result.

Dh's has Gilbert's syndrome too. His bilirubin levels are always high. He looks a bit jaundiced at times, especially if he's been drinking.
Loiis · 25/03/2021 22:18

This was my blood results today if that helps I don’t understand it much tbh like I said the doctor doesn’t seem to wanna speak much to me about it always feel fobbed of by them x

30 for bilirubin is raised very slightly . Levels can be much, much higher than this- in the hundreds . At that level it could be Gilbert’s - could be nothing. The other liver tests - which are more worrying in terms of damage to the liver are normal (ALT and alkaline phosphatase) .
I wouldn’t worry too much about this. You could get it repeated in a few weeks just to check there’s no change .

Loiis · 25/03/2021 22:48

@RunnerDown thank you for the reassurance made me feel better than what my G.P did anyway ...
Yeah I’m having it repeated in 2 weeks time hopefully it has gone down by then fingers crossed x

Raised serum bilirubin but nothing else is typical of Gilbert's but they won't diagnose that until you've had two tests with the same result

Loiis · 26/03/2021 10:43

@QuentinWinters yeah I’m having it repeated in two weeks to see it has gone down or increased more
