Good evening,

I have recently been diagnosed with Genital Herpes, I’m in a long term relationship and it’s come out of nowhere and the doctor states it can appear years later.

I seem to be getting reoccurrences very often and it’s more frustrating than anything.

The doctor also stated that Herpes is extremely common, however is it?

Is herpes normal/common? Do you suffer with this/know anyone who does?

Can I live a normal life with this?

Will my body fight this and will the outbreaks become less frequent and eventually stop?

I’ve been given Aciclovir medication to take 3 times a day when I feel an outbreak coming, seemed to help but would like this to stop for good and need some reassuring that it will eventually.

Apparently about ⅔ of people under the age of 50 carry the herpes virus and not everyone gets symptoms or ever get an outbreak. Oral herpes can also be passed to the genital area through something like oral sex so may not have come from someone with genital herpes

Check out the herpes virus association. They will be able to answer all of your questions there. Yes you can have a normal life, you will just have to abstain from sex during an outbreak. It's very common, and only 20% of people with herpes know they have it! So at least you're lucky enough to be able to manage your symptoms and stop it from spreading. You will need anti virals at the time of an outbreak to help speed up the recovery of the symptoms, although as time passes the symptoms will become less.

My source of information is professional. I can answer a lot of questions from a professional perspective.
