Gallstones? Enlarged liver?

I wonder if anyone is able to give me advice / share their experiences with me. I have had some discomfort under my right ribs for a while now. It started off just feeling like I was heavily pregnant and there wasn't enough space in there for everything. In the summer, one evening, I had some very sharp pain, but that hasn't recurred. Now I feel not pain, but discomfort, a lot of the time. I have a dr's appointment for Monday. Anyone any thoughts?

Infected cartiledge?

gallstones i reckon. I am pretty sure if your liver were enlarged you would be showing other symptoms. My dad had an enlarged liver years ago, he was sick as a pig, couldnt eat - turned out to be glandular fever!

Do you have much indegestion? Do you eat a fatty diet?

utterlyconfused · 08/11/2007 06:46

No, no indigestion. And I have a predominantly healthy diet. In the past 10 days I have cut out alcohol, caffeine and dairy fats and been eating loads of salads. Generally not fatty anyway though.
You know what it's like, in this day and age, you go online to try to work out what's going on, and come off feeling terrified! I have narrowed it down to being gallstones or liver something (what about this cartiledge thing?) but, of course, am terrified of it being really serious. The thing is that I don't have any of those other syptoms, such as nausea or vommiting or jaundice, and I'm not in severe pain - except for that one occasion in the summer, and tbh I thought I could just have pulled a muscle.
Would appreciate any other thoughts.

I had similar symptoms for the first time about 3 years ago. Ultrasound showed no gallstones, endoscopy showed "gastritis", a very general term for all sorts of irritation. Never really got a medication that helped, it cleared up eventually but I do get reoccurances. As it happens I've had it for the last 2 weeks and I'm temepted to go back to the Dr if it doesn't clear.

i honestly wouldnt rule out gallstones as my doctor once told me they could give all manner of weird symptoms. I spent two years with pain under my left ribs, which went away with my gall bladder!! Maybe you should go to the doctors, they will run a blood test which should give some indication if something is wrong. I am actually wondering if the "full" feeling is in itself trapped wind or indegestion as i often get that feeling and find that a good burp fixes it.

Thank you so much. As I say, I do have an appointment with my dr for Monday. You have all helped though, thank you.

I had an swollen liver when suffering from severe pre-eclampsia and was in a lot of pain - couldn't sleep, go to work or really function at all (had no other symptoms so was misdiagnosed as indigestion!). If it's just discomfort, probably not your liver (if I'm anything to go by). Hope you get on well at the gp.

OK. I had my gp appt on Monday. She took blood and referred me for an ultrasound scan. The blood test has just come back normal - it was tested for raised levels of billirubin which means gallstones (I think). So does that definitely mean it's not gallstones, or could they still show up on the scan? I'm frightened now. Hoped it would be something as simple as gallstones.

utterlyconfused, not sure if this helps, but...I had liver disease for years, and never felt a thing. I've also had discomfort, and occasional sharp pains, in that area, and its always been large intestine: basically, wind and/or IBS.

Sounds good that they're checking you out, but bloods would tell you a lot if it was something serious, so try not to worry too much, impossible as that is!

lucyellensmum · 15/11/2007 16:26

utterly confused, just because your billirubin results were not high it doesnt mean that you dont have gallstones. It just means that they are not affecting your liver just now. If they were playing up you would expect the billirubin to be raised. They will have tested for some other liver enzymes too so if there were any serious problems these would have been elevated. As ellie alluded to, it could well be trapped wind, i still get problems with that now. Oh and if it was anything mingning that you might be worried about, it wouldnt hurt!

Thank you both so, so much. It's that sort of reassurance that I really needed. I will just have to wait and see.
