Had a slightly distended, tender to touch stomach with awful pains last week. Also constantly cold and no appetite which is odd as I even eat when I am ill!
Friday I went to doctors who said take some Senna, 2 at night and if no bowel movement by Sunday/Monday to go back.
Took them fri - Monday. Successful in terms of movements but by Tuesday I was having cramping pains which I assumed were because I wasn't eating much and the tablets were trying to push things through. After a chat with DH I decided to see how long you can use it for (was thinking a few days break was needed) when I read that you are supposed to take them 2-3 times over a week. Not four nights in a row!

Had nothing the last 2 nights but am back to having pains, coldness and still no appetite. Also very tired due to not eating much although I am trying and doing better.
Has anyone done this before and can offer advice? If no better by Monday then I will go back to the doctor it I am a bit annoyed at myself and am hoping to fix it! Help!

I would phone the pharmacy tomorrow (or tonight if you have a late night one near you) and have a chat to the pharmacist, hopefully they can reassure you. A quick google just said do not take for more than one week so maybe they brand you are taking are just being extra cautious? Cramps are common with senna, I imagine the coldness could be because you have no fuel in your body to keep you warm. Have you taken any paracetamol for the pain? I wouldn’t wait until Monday to get advice.
I hope you feel better soon Flowers

Thanks. I was thinking the same in terms of being cold. Plus, I am all tensed up due to being cold which isn't helping. So I am drinking hot chocolate for extra calories and warmth.

When I was a nurse we had patients who were prescribed Senna every night , it’s not unusual , probably makes you feel rough if you are not used to it . I’ve taken it several nights in a row before but it has absolutely no effect on me at all .

Ohdoleavemealone · 18/03/2021 19:18

Thanks @Floralnomad at least I know it's not going to do me any harm.

Just need these pains to go away!

It won't hurt you, I have patients who take senna every day.
They just say that because it's over the counter and not prescribed by a GP

Thank you that's great.

I know little about anatomy but have put current pains down to bowel cramping due to too much senna and not enough food to be digested. Hoping that it calms down over the next few days.

Yes, I always thought taking senna was basically an older ladies nighttime routine 😅

Op don't worry I was in hospital for 2.5 weeks before Xmas and I was given senna x2 every night and continued for about a week after coming home.
I trust the doctor knew what he was doing
