Smear test fear

Oscarbin · 14/03/2021 12:39

Just a little off load. I had my smear test last week and I am so scared. I have had LETZ in the passed when I was 22 and thankfully I got the all clear and went to 3 yearly.
So I have just had one that was due in October but due to Covid I could only get in last week.
I have been bleeding in between periods and occasionally after sex but this could be due to the Mirena coil. So with a bit of Googling I have scared myself. I am 40 now.
Has anyone had this and there smear be ok? Just had bloods done too, due to thinking it could be the menapause.
Thank you for reading. X

Hi OP please try not to worry. There are other things that it is more likely to be before you think of the worst case scenario., though I know it's hard as I'm a massive worrier too. And the important thing is that you have had your smear test and done all you can do for now. When you had the bleeding did you go to your doctor? I have had light bleeding it in the past ( turns out it was a polyp) I asked for a smear test and was told they always refer you for a colposcopy if you have symptoms rather than a smear test. So if you haven't done this I would advise going to your doctor and explaining your symptoms. Good luck.

Hi, yeah they took some blood tests last weeks which I think have came back fine as no one has contacted me.
I have been having problems with my periods and don't really know where I am in my cycle so that could be a possibility for bleeding also.
My grandma had cervical cancer and that was treated well! I just worry about my children being without a mam, which I think we all do!

Aw yeah that's completely understandable that you would worry. Hopefully you won't have to wait too much longer for your results. You could ask your doctor to give you a speculum examination if this is an ongoing problem but hopefully your smear results will give you some answers.

Thank you so much, the nurse did say everything looked ok and my coil strings were still intact

Of course it doesn't help that I've googled symptoms and I have every single one

Don't google. You'll drive yourself insane. I do the same though, can't help myself. I'm sure you'll be OK

It’s so hard not to worry when you are in this waiting phase. I have had a LLETZ previously too and despite two clear smears since I do get that fear that it’s there again. Fingers crossed your current symptoms are just down to your coil/hormonal fluctuations - which is the more likely explanation Flowers

Thank you so much xx

I would ask for a gynaecology referral with those symptoms. Hopefully and most likely you'd be reassured at your appointment but they aren't something I'd ignore, recent smear test or not.

Hi yes I'm booked in Monday with the doctor, well over the phone and I'm going to suggest this

Great to hear that your smear came back normal and that you have been referred for an ultrasound. It is horrible to live in fear of something awful being wrong.

Oscarbin · 22/03/2021 19:47

Yeah, all my bloods have came back normal tho, the doctor was lovely and I feel like she actually listened xx
