Staple removal

Hi.

I had a hysterectomy last week and the staples out on Monday. Two or three staple sites are still a bit leaky. How long does it normally take to stop?. No temperature or bad smell etc. We are changing the dressing daily and using saline wipes to keep it clean. Does this sound normal

I would ring them or ring your GP practice, I had about 18 staples removed (from elsewhere) and there was no discharge at all.

Hi. Thanks for responding. Will call GP on Monday if they don't heal over the weekend.

If you’re at home resting maybe try leaving the dressing off and let some air to it if you can?

When DH had staples removed from a knee op and a couple were still a bit open (they were on the side where the knee bends), I bought some steri strips from the chemist to use for an extra few days. Well worth it as that part of his scar healed better than the rest of it!

That's a good idea re the sterile strips. I have a large stomach so it's hard for that part of me to get some air.

The wound itself is fine thankfully. It's just 3 or 4 staple holes that are doing this.

I saw Nurse yesterday and they think one of the staples failed slightly. So she put gauze on it and I have to go back on Thursday for a further review
