Hi has anyone had any side effects to this medication? I was prescribed them last week for indigestion and I honestly wish I had never taken them. They have made me feel so ill. After approximately 3 days of taking them I suddenly started feeling so dizzy and anxious and also had a very dry mouth. I took them for around a week and stopped taking them on Sunday. I am still feeling dizzy today its horrible, my eyes also feel weird. My doctor didn't seem concerned just said that this can be a side effect of them and to stop taking them. I have been reading online and some people have had similar happen to them and the side effects lasted for weeks after stopping taking them. I cant feel like this for weeks. Sorry for any mistakes I am feeling so lightheaded so haven't checked before I post.

What brand are they? I find it takes 2 or 3 weeks to get used to them. I find Losec the best. If one brand doesn't suit you can try another.
The people who complain online are a miniscule fraction of the people taking them. Those people could have other things going on that they are not saying.
Do you take other medications?

I have the same reaction and cannot take them - I need to take something to protect my stomach long term as I take daily life long steroids for Addison’s disease- however oddly enough I can take esomeprazole 40mg instead (prescription strength Nexium).

I have actually had a blood test today to check for Addison's disease. How long did you feel dizzy for after stopping taking the omezrapole? Thanks

A day or so. Then I felt better. I take it you had an early morning cortisol blood test for Addison’s? That’s the only way they can diagnose it - and if you take anything containing oestrogen (HRT or the combined pill) if you haven’t been off it for 6 weeks before the test it won’t be accurate as it falsely elevates cortisol levels. (Mine was 260 whilst on the pill - over the threshold for diagnosis- and zero without, meaning severe and definitive Addison’s disease).

🙋🏻‍♀️ Also Addison’s and also on omeprazole but have never had any side effects other than blessed, blessed relief from the feeling of being stabbed through the sternum from steroid-induced oesophagitis.

Weeks before I was diagnosed with Addison’s, I was put on propranolol for the chronic headaches I was having (the neurologist I was then referred onto for investigations into them discovered the early morning cortisol of 14). Made me sick as a dog and horizontal, probably because it was shoving my blood pressure even further down which was already in my boots from the as-yet-undetected AD.

Wonder if it might be worth seeing what your blood test/s say then trying the omeprazole again if you get treatment for anything as it might just be exacerbating something underlying rather than being a side effect?

I've been taking this now in my 3rd pregnancy due to horrendous acid. I've had no side effects at all apart from the job it's to do and help with the acid.

Bagelsandbrie · 11/03/2021 20:47

Hope you manage to get to the bottom of things. Get them to explore things like lupus and other autoimmune conditions as well. They don’t test for these routinely.

TSJ19 · 11/03/2021 20:50

Thankyou. I try not to google to much as it makes me even more worried. I did have to do a stool sample earlier this week which im waiting on results for. They have suddenly decided to test me for other things after months of me being ill.

I had bad side effects and stopped taking them after about 5/6 days as I was having dizzy spells and had one while driving and it freaked me out. I felt so, so sick on them.

Doctor put me on Ranatadine instead and then when it was withdrawn, Lansoprazole which has worked really well and no side effects.

TSJ19 · 11/03/2021 21:04

Oh no im sorry you had the same happen to you..i haven't actually driven my car as I was worried I may have an accident. I cant describe how they made me feel it was horrible, I had weird dreams while taking them as well and would be awake at 4am for the day. One night I could hear a knocking sound all night it was So Odd.

I took them to protect my stomach when taking naproxen and weirdly they gave me terrible heartburn. Had no issues when I took naproxen on its own.

Hi just wanted to update. All my blood tests have come back as normal so my doctor has said not Addisons. I am still feeling dizzy and my ears have started to hurt they feel buzzy like im underwater. I phoned the doctors today and they have said sounds like a middle ear infection which has caused me to have vertigo. I have been given something for the dizziness and antibiotics hopefully they will help.
