Strange new lump in groin- see GP or wait?

NC for this

Yesterday I noticed a lump in my groin, which is at the seam where my inner thigh meets my groin. It was the size of a marble, hard and slightly sore to touch. Nothing obvious on the surface of the skin to indicate anything (no reddness, head of a spot etc)

Today its the size of a gobstopper and has been generally sore throughout the day. I don't have any other symptoms which would point to an infection.

I've never had anything like this before. An internet search gives conflicting advice.

I'm just debating waiting until after the weekend to see if it goes down, or booking to see the GP tomorrow. It might be absolutely nothing, a swollen node maybe which will go down on its own, in which case I don't want to waste the GPs time.

The only other thing is that within the last six months, I have been getting pains in my inner thighs/groin when I stretch my legs out in bed. I had a baby 18 months ago and I assumed this pains were ligament/tendon related and was due to my body still recovering from pregnancy.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Could it be an in growing hair? I've only ever had about two or three on my bikini line but the first time I got one, I was a bit alarmed at first. It was, as you describe, quite big and hard and tender to touch eg if my underwear rubbed on it.

That said though, if you are concerned it could be something more I'd always say get it checked out ASAP. It's always better to be safe than sorry in my opinion.

I hope it all turns out ok for you.

I have had ingrowing hairs before but never had a lump like this. It feels too far under the skin (if that makes sense) to be an ingrown hair. However, DH is going to have a closer look for me later as there's only far much that contorting myself and mirrors can do (he's a good sport like that)

Thanks for your post

This is see GP ASAP territory for me

welshweasel · 11/03/2021 16:26

Yes you need to see a GP - could be an abscess, lymph node, femoral hernia...

Einszwei · 11/03/2021 16:26

Sounds like a swollen lymph node - I would get it seen to.

Downthefarm · 11/03/2021 16:27

Men can get hernias there.

Borderterrierpuppy · 11/03/2021 16:33

Gp appointment for this one.

SilverGoldfinch · 11/03/2021 16:34

Given the location I agree re swollen lymph node being likely.

I have had them pop up before in exactly the same place and they've been precisely as you describe- hard, moveable marbles.

Definitely worth getting checked out by your doctor but whilst any lump is scary and warrants investigation, it may well be something innocuous. Mine just went away on their own, assume it was some kind of viral response although I wasn't 'ill' either time.

For everyone saying lymph node, I thought that they are on the ‘front’ of the groin rather than going down the inside of the thighs. This lump is in my bikini line/inner thigh crease. Could that still be a lymph node?

Women can get hernias there to, I had one right on the bikini line, small lump, mainly painless except when prodded, occasionally ached. Once confirmed as hernia I had hernia op which was fine, annoyingly it returned after the birth of my second child, surgery again and not bothered me since.

RizzleRazzle · 11/03/2021 18:13

I have the same, right in my bikini line. It appeared a few weeks after a miscarriage, I went to the GP and was referred on the 2 week pathway, had it scanned and it was a swollen lymph node.

Worth getting it checked out just in case.

Yes, my enlarged lymph nodes were exactly there.

Gp visit.

CrotchetyQuaver · 11/03/2021 22:34

Could be an abscess brewing, that's a GP jobby, you may need antibiotics

Strangelump123 · 12/03/2021 08:40

Thanks all for the replies. It is slightly bigger today (so it’s grown in size in three days) so I’ve booked the GP for this afternoon. Hopefully nothing sinister!

Hi OP,

What did the GP say?

Cormoran · 13/03/2021 19:52

Slim women can get hernia in the groin
