Does it sound like anemia?

Been feeling rubbish for a few months now. It's not constant, and seems to be worse before and during my period. Yesterday was probably the worst I've felt - including some dark thoughts that really scared me.

My symptoms are:
Heavier periods
Shaky and weak
Low or no energy
Never feel rested even after a good sleep
Shivery and get goosebumps often
Crampy feelings in leg muscles sometimes
Sometimes at night feel like my heart is beating too fast
Tingly feeling scalp almost like the burning feeling if you use hair dye and are allergic (haven't used hair dye recently)
Depression/no concentration/ feel like I'm a fog sometimes
PMT much worse than usual

Waiting for a call back from the doctor but just wondering if anyone's had these symptoms and what it might be. I've felt really bad once before but I ended up with a blood transfusion after childbirth so that's what's making me think possible anemia.

With me all those symptoms were a combination of hypothyroidism & anaemia.

I hope the Dr suggests blood tests and, whatever it turns out to be, has you feeling better soon Flowers

WhiskyIrnBru · 10/03/2021 15:48

I second hypothyroid. Very much similar symptoms.

whatsthematternow · 10/03/2021 19:02

I've to get blood tests done so they are going to check my thyroid and some other things too. I'm hoping I'll get the tests quickly and results quickly too as I'm just feeling so awful today. Sad

I'm currently anaemic, my worst symptoms were restless leg syndrome and shortness of breath. I hope you get some answers for whatever is wrong.

whatsthematternow · 10/03/2021 19:12

Thank you. I'm just looking forward to finding out the cause and hopefully getting something to help. I've felt like this for a while but I think I've just been trying to struggle on in the hope it would get better but instead seem to be getting worse.

Could be anemia I felt very low when v anemic

Eloisedublin123 · 10/03/2021 22:50

Are you taking iron?

whatsthematternow · 11/03/2021 07:51

I'm not currently taking iron tablets. I was on iron tablets after my children were born but then was told that my levels were fine again and stopped taking them.

I’d start on them again if you’re periods are heavy

Blackopal · 11/03/2021 09:15

Yes it sounds exactly how I felt when I was admitted as emergency for blood transfusions to treat severe aeneamia caused by heavy periods.

I am not trying to scare you and probably ,if you are anaemic, you might just require iron tablets.
I am letting you know that those were my symptoms exactly. The doctor at first, was quite blasé, untill the blood test results were returned.
Make sure your GP gives you a blood test.

Thanks @Blackopal. I've had a blood transfusion before after my first child was born so that's definitely how I feel.
Going for blood tests today so hoping I won't wait too long for results!

I'm glad you have a blood test soon, and I hope you get whatever help you need to resolve the issue.

Heavy periods are awful and take such a toll on our health. Mine was caused by fibroids and I had a hysterectomy a few weeks ago.

Please think about pushing for a scan to investigate cause of the heavy periods regardless of anemia result. Really shouldn't have to suffer through this every month.

whatsthematternow · 11/03/2021 09:33

Yes, I'll definitely be pushing to find out the reason for them. I seem to be getting worse every month as well so definitely want to find out what's going on and get to the bottom of it all.

Sounds like anaemia to me.

By the way you can still be low on iron even if your blood test results are 'normal'. The range for iron/ferritin is so large that you could be classed as normal but be too low for your normal.

whatsthematternow · 11/03/2021 10:08

Yeah, I think that's worth taking into account. I know when I got the blood transfusion before I was slightly above the normal cut off for one but I was so ill/symptomatic that they gave me one anyway. Will need to see what the levels come back as this time but I really feel awful again today.

Mmm. Im frequently severely aenemic and biggest symptoms are breathlessness, feeling dizzy, fast heartbeat, restless legs and ringing in ears. Ehat colour are your lips? Mine go white and thats a very good indicator for me.

whatsthematternow · 11/03/2021 10:25

@Redannie118, my lips just look their normal pink colour I would say. My skin is pale but no different looking than normal. Shortness of breath is something I've had on and off since last year when I had some sort of viral infection.
