Vitamin D dosage

Hi

I’ve recently been advised to take vitamin D by my endocrinologist, my level was 21 so right at the bottom of the normal range (he said 20-30 needs treatment).

I’ve got some tablets which are 50,000iu - should I be taking them once a week or once every other week? I’ve found conflicting advice online

Thanks

How much did they tell you to take?

Nhs says maximum daily amount would be 4000IU/100ug so if you've to take more than that then you should get proper medical advice

Endocrinologist said to check with GP but I can’t get a call with them for ages...... He said it’s normally either every other week or every week. Maybe I’ll start every other week just incase

That's a very high dose. I wouldn't start until you have GP advice. Presumably you don't have any liver or kidney conditions? Also, read up about taking K2 with it.

That is definitely a question for your endocrinologist! Are you sure they didn't mean to take a normal dose daily? When my levels were low, that is what the GP said. I was never told to take a higher dose.

That's a loading dose, so nothing to worry about.

Try googling 'vitamin D prescribing guidelines + where you live' That should give you the answer.

in my area, for a level of 21, it would be 50,000ius a week for six weeks, then maintain on 800 or 1,000ius a day.

Does that help?

No he gave me a prescription for this dosage but said to check frequency with GP.

I’m recovering from a thyroid problem which has knocked me for six a bit so he did bloods to check lots of vitamin levels and D was the only one that came out low. I should of asked more questions at the time but there was lots of other information so it got a bit missed
