Solid yellow/ white lumps coming out of my tonsils

I've had this problem on and off for as long as I can remember but haven't done anything about it.

When I look in the mirror, my tonsils have holes in them - I thought that was what all tonsils looked like but now I don't know. Out of the holes, come small whitey/ yellow horrible tasting lumps - they make my breath smell. What on earth is this?

I don't want to have to go to the GP for various reasons. Does anyone have any idea what this is? Or what I can do about it.

Aparently they're called tonsil stones. There was a thread on this a couple of weeks ago iirc. They've got a proper medical name but I can't remember it.

Weirdly though, I very, very occasionally get similar and I don't have any tonsils

why wouldnt you go to the gp for this?? sounds yuk and maybe is due to serious infection? would imagine may make you really ill.....

bookthief · 04/11/2007 22:32

Google tonsil stones btw. Tis fairly normal and not a problem. I'm sure someone on here admitted to squeezing them

Utterly gross but compelling website including DIY cures

DynamiteDaisy · 04/11/2007 22:35

oooohhh sore

having suffered from recurrent tonsilitis over the years that need anti-biotics, you really want to be going to your GP.

either your tonsils are very swollen and the "holes" are pus-ey bits of tonsil, or you have something more serious going on.

How often does this happen? and do you have pain and fever with it?

whenever I have tonsilitis it os very very sore and I feel like sh1te. bed rest, lots of fluids and ABs are the only things that will shift it.

The comments are unreal. There is a woman who digs out ten at a time with a safety pin.
OMFG

DynamiteDaisy · 04/11/2007 22:36

I've never heard of tonsil stones...well you live and learn!

bookthief · 04/11/2007 22:39

Why would that remedy ever occur to you?

"Oh, I have an odd, foul smelling spot on my tonsil"

"I know, I'll have a good rootle around the back of my throat with a safety pin."

YuckityYuck · 04/11/2007 22:39

Thanks for all the responses - and so quickly too!

That's exactly what they are - Tonsil Stones.

I have never worried about it because it comes and goes and isn't at all painful. They just appear in my mouth

This really is disgusting.

'rootle' is a terrific verb.

moondog · 04/11/2007 22:42

Someone else favours a Qtip.
Yet another a sharp fungernail.

YuckityYuck · 04/11/2007 22:44

lol

no safety pins here. Not that I'd stick one near my tonsils though. Am thinking I should demand a tonsillectomy!

Or maybe I'll just rootle with a Qtip!
