Hysterectomy with 40+ BMI

Hi.

Due to have hysterectomy next week and have very high BMI.

Has anyone else been in the same position?. If so, how was it?. I clearly can't get BMI down to sensible levels in 7 days so can't don't much about that.
I'm reasonably fit, walk every day plus spin classes twice a week. ECG and pre op was all fine.

Ideally, I would just like some positive stories. I need the op so am comfortable that I am doing the right thing.....just pre op nerves kicking in

I haven’t been in the same position but just wanted to reassure you that if everything was fine at the pre-op assessment then the hospital must be confident it’s safe to go ahead with the op.

Best of luck Flowers.

Hi Op,
I had a full hysterectomy 16 months ago.
At the time I weighed 21 stone (and I'm only 5 ft 2)
No, it wasn't an ideal situation to be in but had stage 1 ovarian cancer so there wasn't any choice.
Everything went absolutely fine, I did develop a serious infection in the wound on day 10 but it wasn't concidered a result of my high BMI
The tumor on my Overy turned out to weigh 50lbs so I actually lost 3 stone on the operating table!!!
I can't say it's a diet I would recommend!
Be reassured that if all the checks were ok at your pre-op then things will be ok 🙂

Thanks. I bet you felt better after having that removed.

I've been warned it's likely to be open surgery due to my size although they'd like to do it keyhole if possible. Had large ovarian cyst a year ago via keyhole but my hopes aren't high. How long was your recovery ?

Hi OP, I’m not the same BMI but had open surgery 5 weeks ago and everything taken out. My first day (same day as surgery) was grim, I was very sick from the anaesthetic which meant I couldn’t sleep. The day after wasn’t nice either but I was given good pain relief. I stayed in for 3 days post surgery and was begging to come home. I’ve not had many painkillers at home and recovery has been good so far. Make sure you walk a bit every day but don’t do too much. I had to do blood thinning injections at home, I found them quite painful and thankfully my DP did them (in my thighs) as I would have struggled to do them. Good luck - my worst things are lack of sleep and hot flushes due to no ovaries. The scar is big (belly button down) but should fade.

Sadly I have been left with permanent damage to my stomach muscles so have a lot of pain.
Recovery was actually better than I thought it would be. Immediately after the surgery once they had got the pain under control things were ok. I was in intensive care for 3 days and that passed in a haze of morphine. I was on a regular ward for 2 days and that wasn't so good as it was so hot and noisy.
Once home I could just sit and watch tv!
I only had 5 weeks off work as I'm self employed and that definitely wasn't enough especially with the infected wound. It did take me several months to feel anything near normal again

Hi this is my first time here so very nervous and I’m young I’m 24 and didn’t know the best place to look for a group or maybe someone knows somewhere I can go and meet others in similar situations as I’m struggling to deal with it on my own and no one around me understands it as they have no experience. When I was 18 I gave birth and the birth took an unexpected turn and it was a life or death situation and I almost died the hospital operated and I was asleep no idea what had happened woke up the next day and was in intensive care I was told the day after that they had no choice but to perform a hysterectomy and remove my womb and that I’ll still have my ovaries so I don’t age quick and that I cannot conceive naturally and can through IVF I’ve been living with this as a constant battle of mixed emotions
and confusion without help for 6 years and I’ve suffered with depression I hope someone can help and not judge I just don’t know what to do.
