coccyx pain

NeedaCushion · 15/02/2021 18:33

I have rheumatoid arthritis which is pretty well controlled on hydroxychloroquine. However, the most painful bit of me is my coccyx and it is very, very tender and getting worse over the last few weeks. My doctor says that RA does not affect the spine (so it must be all in my head). Has anybody experienced this and if so, did it get better and did anything help?

I do have a coccyx cushion but it is quite thin and doesn't make much difference. Most pain killers make me sick, especially NSAIDs. I haven't injured it in any way.

TIA

I don't know if this would help you but I've recently had steroids injected in that area as it was inflamed. It was facet joint injections.

Sorry if that doesn't help at all!

I have had my knee injected in the past and it helped for about 3 weeks. But it was my consultant who did it and I don't think she is taking this problem seriously. But I could ask. Thank you.

I have a really good cushion and it makes the world of difference.

I guess part of the issue is that it isn't visible. My knee was really swollen and inflamed, so pretty obvious. It is an awkward place to have pain.

Fish, where did you get your cushion? I would be happy to buy a better one.

Do you have someone who could look at the area very closely for you?

I had a pilonidal sinus abcess which behaved as you described. By the time I couldn't sit down it only had a pin sized red dot at the surface. 4 days later I was in hospital being operated on to drain it.

Omg.
Yes, I will ask dh. He isn't squeamish. I never thought of that.
Tmi, but it really hurts when I go to the loo. Not like with piles or anything, but the coccyx.

@NeedaCushion I damaged my coccyx last May whilst giving birth. It was the worst pain imaginable and took month to recover. Ther are some exercises that you doctor should be able to give you to help with some of the pain. I had the same issue with my cushion in that it looked great but wasn't deep enough. It was so uncomfortable to sit and the getting up from sitting was terrible. It has gone and been gone now for a good few months, however if I sit on my office chair it comes back within a day or two

I injured mine once and it sometimes flares up. Hot water bottle seems to help, plus if my core muscles aren’t strong enough during a lazy phase and I’ve been lounging around this can set it off too. Exercise seems to fix it over a period of time. Pillow under the knees in bed might help or worse case physio/Pilates
