How long does diarrhoea last?

Hubby felt off Tuesday. He ached all over and just wanted to sleep. He had terrible tummy pain. No temperature. Wednesday he seemed a bit better. Then Thursday felt horrendous. Wanted to sleep, tummy pain and diarrhoea. He had constant diarrhoea since Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Immodium (or the similar brand we have at home) seems to be helping a bit but he's not really eaten since Wednesday. What should we expect in terms of feeling better?

It depends on the cause. Tbh Imodium isn’t a good idea as it gives the bugs a chance to multiply rather than being expelled.

He would be better drinking dioralyte and eating dry toast/plain biscuits.

Food poisoning can last a couple of weeks if it is bad.

That said it could be a COVID symptom so might be worth seeing if he can get a test.

Ignore the dont take Immodoum as the bug wont get out. Thats a bad, old rumour. You only dont use it in certain conditions.

Take it as allowed.

Make sure he's hydrated. Eat plain food. Things like clear soup or jelly. Avoid fibre or anything spicy.
I"d call 111 if it lasts 72 hour or he gets worse eg if he starts vomittimg also. feeling faint or getting bad abdominal pain.. They may ask for a stool sample.

Hopefully it's something he ate and hes better soon.

In this covid crisis it's easy to forget it's also norovirus season which causes watery diarrhoea. Can he manage drinks and crackers, does he have a temperature at all since Tuesday. Hope he feels better soon, has he been anywhere where he might have picked up a tummy bug or eaten out.

carrottopper · 13/02/2021 18:19

Someone he works with had it at the weekend so presuming he picked it up from him. He hasn't had a temperature or loss of taste or smell, just diarrhoea. Feels like everything is a symptom of coronavirus.

I did actually have terrible diarrhoea and stomach pain when I had Covid along with an array of other symptoms so I would definitely take a test just in case.

If it's a bug generally the worst would be over in 48 hours so that's quite a while for constant diarrhoea.

If youre husband like you say has been in cotact with someone at work with it i would not take a Covid test.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 14/02/2021 05:36

He should take a Covid test. A friend of mine was really very ill with Covid and it began exactly as you describe your husband's symptoms. It wasn't until he was tested for Covid on admission to hospital that they realised what was wrong.

FigDate · 14/02/2021 05:56

A family member has tested positive for covid this week and diarrhoea is only symptom. Isolate as a household and get a test.

NellNorth · 14/02/2021 06:08

Diarrhoea was the main first symptom in a young woman I know who was hospitalised with Covid. Get a test.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 14/02/2021 23:28

I hope your husband is starting to feel a bit better .

Thanks. Sorry for the late reply. Test came back negative. He feels a lot better but it did last a few weeks. He still can't stomach strong smelling things
