Clarithromycin work of the devil ?

donerwillbehere · 09/02/2021 14:22

I have been prescribed Claritthromycin 250 twice each day for 2 weeks followed by one tablet twice each day for the next 4 weeks. By ENT. I would say for a week I have had the most weirdest feelings - spaced out - anxious - shaky- trembly- blurred vision long distance ok short distance blurred . Looks like I have been on drugs
I have spoken with DR, they have said nope not antibiotics. So have taken some bloods.
Has anyone else had this sort of reaction
Almost like it devils work .
Anyone offer some advice please

I'm looking at the leaflet in the pack right now

Anxiety, confusion, disorientation, changes in sense of reality all listed

Your doctor should take this seriously. It might be that you're temporarily stuck with it but there might be an alternative

Has the doc checked the obvious stuff - contraindications, allergies?

Strongswans · 09/02/2021 14:34

I hate it, always have a strong metallic taste in my mouth that I can't get rid of. I'm allergic to penicillin so don't have much choice. Your g.p. Should be taking these reactions seriously, if not ask for a different g.p.

AgnesNaismith · 09/02/2021 14:36

I had these side effects with flucloxacillin - ugh I’m so sorry for you OP, it’s a horrible feeling. I had to sleep for hours after each tablet.

My GP switched me to clarithromycin and I was actually ok with that one so I think it depends on the person. You should definitely request an alternative!

CutsOffCorners · 09/02/2021 14:37

Oh god I had clarithromycin a few years ago and the side effects were horrific. I was lying awake all night every night with my heart racing for a week, and the taste in my mouth was unbearable.

Bagelsandbrie · 09/02/2021 14:39

For balance, it’s one of the only antibiotics I can take that works really well and I don’t have side effects with (I am allergic to many others and have a lot of kidney issues - I actually take daily long term antibiotics but will take a course of this if I have a flare). I’m sorry you’re so poorly.

LemonBreeland · 09/02/2021 14:41

here is the summary of product characteristics. Section 4.8 shows side effects. This is in more detail than the patient leaflet. I would ask your GP to take this more seriously.

Ladies thank you thank you .
For the first week I also had to take 30mg prednisone daily for a week . Since I would say last Tuesday/ Wednesday anxiety like I have never known . I was prescribed anti anxiety that just heightened everything , I was only on them for 2 days couldn't tolerate at all so stopped . Pharmacy said speak to GP which I did . Nope not antibiotics . Offered bloods .
I explained that to begin with was sweaty 🥵 and shaky and just got progressively worse .
Ladies did you experience similar?

Have to say sinuses feel great .... just the rest of me Smile

I was prescribed by the hospital . DR has said you must finish course .

I suppose I will have tinder what he bloods result say .

The nurse said that two GPS have requested bloods so you are having a through bloods MOT .( I think GP I spoke with checked with my GP who I normally see )

The more I read about the side effects the more I am convinced it is the AB.

OP I am not a doctor or nurse

I had lots of sinus infections in one go several years back. Just clarith or, as I learned later, doxycycline, were fine for me.

Isn't prednisone really knockout strong stuff? I remember it being mentioned as a possible next step for me but never had to take it.

How bad is the rhinitis? My sister has it but uses a nasal spray (prescription).

donerwillbehere · 09/02/2021 17:20

#Lunaheather

My symptoms started 1-2 years ago . Coincided with a move new house surrounded with lots of foliage and woods .

Sneezing , mucus, post nasal drip along with squeaky nose ( at night ) and loss of smell . I nasal douched and was waking in the night almost choking as the mucus was hoovering over windpipe ( not nice)
I initially was treated with nasal spray becaonsil . Didn't improve and then after months was prescribed anti histamine fluonase and Avamys .
In October was diagnosed with asthma which were all connected .
GP then made a referral to hospital ENT . Prescribed nasty AB

For your sister I would recommend avamys it was the most effective ,

Also nasal spray are really good to clear upper airway .

LunaHeather · 09/02/2021 18:00

OP, that is the nasal spray my sister has, she finds it very good.

So you were not given antibiotics till this had been going on for ages?

RubyGoat · 09/02/2021 18:05

I hate clarithromycin. It always makes me feel absolutely sick as a dog. I'm allergic to penicillin so options are limited.

donerwillbehere · 09/02/2021 18:16

Lunaheather .

Yes referral was made in October . I think partnered with the asthma i asked for a referral to ENT . Your sister should be aware that after a period of time when I blow my nose in the morning , there were strings of blood . This is because Avamys has a steroid which will thin the lining of the nose . It's not painful I would suggest that if or when this happens . GP could make a referral from my understanding the GP can only prescribe certain meds .

Which side effects have you had ?

OP posts:
caringcarer · 09/02/2021 18:20

It is only thing that gets rid of my cellulitus when it occurs. Allergic to penicillin.

LunaHeather · 09/02/2021 18:22

What I'm puzzled by is why the GP didn't prescribe antiobiotics at about two weeks into what sounds like a nasty sinus infection.

I'll grant you I had a battle at mine, but after three weeks they were willing to try it.

It sounds like they left you alone with it for ages and then did an ENT referral.

I hope it is sorted now. I have been on the receiving end of wrong treatment, further investigations and all sorts too many times to trust them now so I try to read up as much as I can on any meds before I get the prescription.

SisterAgatha · 09/02/2021 18:27

I had this reaction and eventually passed out - well, still conscious but was unable to stand up or move any part of my body. So a kind of waking paralysis. I was found half in the hallway half in the bathroom door to be sick.

I wouldn’t touch clarythromycin ever again.

donerwillbehere · 09/02/2021 18:39

#sisteragatha

That is terrible how many days had you been taking ?

#lunaheather

Sorry to hear that you to have had to go through rotten side effects .

Definitely moving forward I will check meds . I am interested to know what antibiotic family they belong . I never had a reaction like this so would like to know more .

OP posts:
Theunamedcat · 09/02/2021 18:43

I cant drive my car when I take the stuff my body does adapt but it sucks at first

donerwillbehere · 09/02/2021 18:46

the unarmed at

I wonder if my body will adjust . I have got another 5 weeks to go .

I am off work at the moment dreading going back . Certainly wouldn't be able to function .*

OP posts:
ballsdeep · 09/02/2021 20:57

Yes! I felt horrendous on them

donerwillbehere · 09/02/2021 21:58

Gosh ..... I have been reading some awful reports on a med support some people really have suffered . Never realised how danger it can be.

I don't think I will take one tonight and speak with the hospital tomorrow.

Or cut down the dose to 250 x 2 a day . See how I go .

Anyone stuck with it and side effects subside ?
