Low resting pulse rate advice. 51bpm

Tinkerbellone · 07/02/2021 11:05

Hi
I've always had a low pulse rate. I remember going to A&E when I was a older teen and the dr asked me if I was an athlete. I am reasonably active but not an athlete!! Lol
I am always tired as far back as I can remember. Sometimes A bit dizzy getting up. Nothing major. I have 4 children (could account for tiredness!) I am now 45.
Any thoughts? I've read about bracicardia.
I don't want to waste my drs time to get checked. Anyone similar?
Thank you xx

DH has a resting heart rate of below 50 most of the time and his doctors aren't worried. He had an infection in his heart last year and it dropped to 42- they still weren't particularly worried.
If you are concerned though see your GP for BP check etc.

FuzzyPuffling · 07/02/2021 13:58

Mine is usually around 52, but has dropped as low as 36. Last week it was 46.
I have mentioned it to the GP and rheumatology consultant and they are less than interested! I'm definitely no athlete.

Mine is about 50 but has been 40. My gp was uninterested! I feel fine and I exercise ok.

Talk to your GP

If accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness especially when or upon standing or changing position, any chest pains or palpitations or generally feeling tired/lethargic/thick head etc I would get checked out. It may well be nothing and sounds like you usually run abit low from your history but a simple check over and potentially simply blood tests can just make sure all ok

MonsterMunchPaws · 07/02/2021 22:59

I also have a low resting hr and am the same with blood pressure. A gp once said to me that if it’s normal for you then it’s just normal. It’s a bit like low blood pressure, it’s only low if you have symptoms of low blood pressure if that makes sense. I’d mention it alongside the other symptoms you’re experiencing but wouldn’t think anything of it in itself.

OverByYer · 07/02/2021 22:59

Mine is the same. Also have low blood pressure. Prone to dizzy spells but get the impression no one would be bothered so have never been to GP.
I sometimes wear my sports watch to sleep and it can go to low 40s

Namechange600 · 07/02/2021 23:06

I’ve had similar- my resting HR is 50s(also not an athlete 🤣). I have a condition which causes chronic pain and sometimes it can drop to 30/40 if it’s particularly bad.
Also have you heard of a condition called POTS - that can cause your heart rate to rise fast when you stand up leading to feeling faint, tiredness etc

TheSockMonster · 07/02/2021 23:08

I had no idea that was abnormal, mine is the same. No one has ever commented on it, but I do get told my blood pressure is low. No idea if one causes the other?

Tiredness is worth getting checked out though, especially since you’ve been experiencing it for a long time.

As an aside, I did a 1 month trial of propranolol (a beta blocker) for migraine and have never felt so ill in my life! My active blood pressure would not go above 51-52. I remember trying to climb a long flight of steps and sweating profusely as my heart simply refused to beat any faster. Awful!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply. I feel reassured after reading your experiences.
My sleeping heart rate is much lower but general resting around 51.
Thanks for sharing. Xx
