Enlarged tonsil

I have always had an enlarged tonsil one larger than the other but today I looked in there with a torch as it was hurting to swallow & I’ve noticed a small red lump next to it. It feels sore when I swallow since the little lump has come up & my head is aching but I do suffer with sinus infections a lot. I googled about the tonsil and lump an cancer is coming up! Should I contact the gp if it doesn’t go away ?

Hi @Hey12345678

Yes I would contact your GP. By chance I also contacted my GP about an enlarged tonsil last week. I’m not sure how long I’ve had it but can’t remember it ever looking different. When I looked it also looks like it has a small red lump next to it.

Anyway from a photo GP said she wasn’t too concerned but referred to an ENT. It wasn’t an urgent referral but I have health anxiety and am actually going to see the specialist this evening. Feeling very nervous as also googled and google doesn’t suggest many other options

So definitely worth contact GP - if it’s sore thought could also be that you have a current infection.

@littlestpogo thank you. ! That’s helpful , please report back and let me know what happens at your appointment and good luck! I bet the nhs referrals take absolutely ages with the pandemic.

@Hey12345678

So I had my consultation. For my case the consultant thinks it’s unlikely it’s malignant but I’m going to have an MRI next week. If nothing shows up on that then option would be have another MRI in a couple of months to check no change. My other option is to have them removed - this would be more for the fact that I get sore throats ( I actually didn’t think they were that frequent but apparently they are!) and because I’m anxious so would keep worrying.

Anyway I think you really should get it checked out as my story is obviously different to yours and your GP is the best person to advise ( particularly as you have always had enlarged tonsils). But also I know when I googled it looked like there was no other reason for an enlarged tonsil other than cancer so wanted to let you know it seems there can be other reasons.
