Toenail split at base

It doesn't really hurt but what should I do? It looks like it might peel off but not sure what's underneath.;(

I wouldn't poke around it too much, put a plaster on it if it might catch on your sock. I've had similar a while after I bumped my toe quite painfully, but obviously you've not mentioned this. There was just "fresh" nail under mine, it was like double layered.

Try and keep it together!

I had a split toenail - vertical not horizontal and it took me two years to fix!!!!! It was literally this week I thought huh I havent caught my toenail in a while. Went to check and wow I have a whole nail again. You do not want to split it on purpose. It can damage the nail bed.

2 years !! I was thinking a few months :( haven't idea why it split but I had similar on a smaller toe.

You've probably dropped something on it at some point a couple of months ago. It looks like a new nail is growing under the old one and pushing it up from the base. The new nail will grow up and eventually push the old one off. By summer you should have a new nail, just a bit shorter than the others as it will be still growing up. This happened to me as a teenager.
