UTI but persisting?

Hi everyone,

I joined just to discuss this since everyone seems so supportive on these threads!

Shortly before boxing day, I started to get pain and frequent urination, shortly followed by pain on my side. I went to the doctors, was given antibiotics. The symptoms took about 5 days to abate but they did, except for the side pain. So the doctor suggested it could be kidney stones and referred me for an ultrasound.

Since then, the symptoms have been on and off. Over the last day or so, I've been getting lower back pain as well. So I've been really freaking out (I have anxiety and my mind goes to worst case scenario).

The ultrasound showed no stones or structural abnormalities so I dont know why its still happening. I have another doctors appointment next week, the waiting is just really hard.

I guess this was more a vent than anything, I just need to get it off my chest.

You might just need more antibiotics. Some nasty infections can take 2 or 3 goes to clear it, or they may not have been the right antibiotics.

I am going through something similar at the minute. I have microscopic blood and leukocytes in my urine, and other than that, just bladder pain/twinges. 3 days of antibiotics did nothing. Now trying a 7 day course. I am an anxious person too, and already worrying about this course not working! My symptoms are on and off too, like yours. I have had this experience before (in 2019), and it was only until it had spread to my kidneys that I was cured (because the doctors finally prescribed something strong enough!). UTIs can be very stubborn. I hope you get better very soon.

That sounds so similar to mine, the lower back pain is new for me but prior to that it was just my bladder feeling uncomfortable. The pain is just draining me and making me so anxious.

I hope you get better soon as well!

I've just finished a five day course of antibiotics macrodantin for a uti and I had to ring doctors yesterday morning as I felt as if the uti was still there I keep going for a wee, urine looked slightly cloudy and I had a warm feeling as the wee come out.
Sent in a Urine sample and nurse rang me to say it showed blood and was getting sent to lab results Monday.
I've had blood showing up in my urine on the doctors dip strip for years so might not have an infection still hopefully but my main reason for panic is because in October I was on a three day course of macrodantin for a uti and when the course was finished I got worse and had a fit during the night due to it still being there and it went to my kidney, long story short I ended up in hospital for nearly three weeks!!!
Do not want that again so I get your anxiety but it seems once you get one they keep occurring, I had a spate of them for about two years ten years ago and then nothing for five years then I had another couple uti's.
Hope you're ok it's horrible the pressure pain is horrendous I find.

So I ended up at Emergency today because the back pain got so bad. They tested my urine again and think that its an infection again. Hopefully these antibiotics work!

I'm wondering how you are?

My infection went away after the 7 day course of antibiotics. Weird that this is the second time I've had to have a longer course. Each time, the doctors insist that 3 days should be enough, and start talking about referring me to the hospital. Then it gets worse and they prescribe something stronger/longer course, and it goes. Clearly 3 days is not enough for some infections!

Hoping you're better now.

@Trinacham

Hi! I've just finished a 14 day course of antibiotics and am still not feeling right. I'm getting checked again next week to see if the infection actually cleared up and if not, I have to go on a 12 week course of low dose antibiotic.

I'm just sick of kidney pain and discomfort...

Ask for a referral to a urologist. I had problems for years because my infections were not properly dealt with.

Trinacham · 10/02/2021 06:54

I'm surprised your doctor isn't already referring you. My Dr referred me to a urologist after it wouldn't go away last time after only giving me two 3 day courses.

okokok000 · 10/02/2021 10:29

Some drs just don't take it seriously. Sounds like you have a good dr.

I had to really push for a referral despite having private medical insurance through work 🙄. Really wish I had done it sooner. Would have saved years of distress.

In all honesty, I do think they referred me too early though, as after a longer course of antibiotics, I was cured both times. They just seem so reluctant to give a longer course, when sometimes that is all that is needed! My hospital appointment was a waste, as they did nothing, because by the time I had it, the infection was gone!
