Has your digestive system changed in your mid 40's?

Just me then?

I'm early 50s but from my mid 40s I started getting the occasional bouts of really painful trapped wind. It got more frequent and is linked to peri menopause.

sadie9 · 17/01/2021 20:35

Yes. Started getting gastritis and indigestion and fullness, now take omeprazole. Also cannot tolerate beans or pulses and cannot eat vegetables (except basic salad veg) during the day as would have gas, bloating and wind all day.

Fattymummum · 18/01/2021 00:29

Yes although ive always suffered from bloatedness because of ibs but its been constant fullness for the past year and im 45. Ive been worried about it being something serious.

Yes, late 40s to early 50s - developed hideous IBS. I'm 59 now and medicated for it but I still get crazy flare-ups.

I also developed Hashimoto's (thyroid issues). Lovely Confused

Smiledwiththerisingsun · 18/01/2021 09:21

Has anyone found any helpful remedies that don't involve medication?

I'm getting some good outcomes from trying to have a prebiotic and a probiotic every day. Sounds a bit wanky, but it seems to help.

The probiotic is easy - I have a live / active yogurt.

For the prebiotic I am lucky I like apple cider vinegar. I have a swig of that in the morning. It's also good for regulating blood sugar. Or you could use it in a salad dressing, or just eat an apple instead! It's a bit of a marmite taste tbh.

(You should have seen the autocorrects the first time I wrote that post! Absolute gobbledygook.)

I found it harder to phone it in diet wise, if I don’t eat health unprocessed food I feel so groggy.

Porridge oats, bananas and dates are all really good for the diegestive tract. I make mine with plain water.

I don't like dates, so I have syrup of figs occasionally which DP thinks is hilarious.
