Endoscopy and throat spray

Am due to have an endoscopy sometime soon, have had it years ago without sedation. I found it horrendous so I'm opting for sedation this time.

What still scares me is when I had the throat spray, I felt like I couldn't breathe for a few seconds and was suffocating and gagging for breathe.. Sad

Im wondering if anyone had the endoscopy with sedation but without the throat spray??? And was it ok?

I've a terrible gag reflex and hate having anything like this but with sedation you really won't know much about it @lul37
The medication they use has also come on alot over the years too so try not to worry too much xx

I just had the sedation and was fine. I was in cloud cuckoo land and honestly didn’t care what was going on.

I've had the throat spray and (happily) didn't have your experience. I do think it helps to have it, though, as I could immediately tell that it was helping to numb my throat. It sounds as though perhaps they sprayed you with a bit too much, last time - I'd recommend telling them what you're worried about when you go in, and if they're a good team (most of them will be) they'll prolly go out of their way to try to help Thanks

@SpudsandGravy I think you're right...about them spraying too much. I was petrified and I had stupidly agreed without sedation back then. I think that's why they used too much throat spray. Will definitely need to tell them to not use too much, and all at once, just want it over and done with tbh.

Hi there :)

Don't be afraid to tell them that you're worried. I've had a lot of these over the years (though most of them more than 20 years ago) and have become thoroughly scared of them. I had to have one last year and so I explained when I went in now nervous I was, and that the sedation had not worked for me in the past. They were very receptive, and agreed to give me two kinds of sedation. I don't know what the drugs were, but they started with one and increased the dose little by little until I was able to tell them that I was finally feeling a little woozy. After that they went ahead with the usual meds.

It was just a bit uncomfy at the start, when I had to swallow the scope, but after that it was fine, and the staff were very kind and reassuring. I'll never look forward to having one, but I wouldn't feel the need to be as worried if I have to have another Thanks
