No don't - you'd be gutted if you gave everyone food poisoning.

Have you got time to go out and get some more?

noonar · 26/10/2007 15:54

SR, i know you're right. i'm just gutted because i bought lovely losely ice cream...doubt i'll get that at the co op up the road

just figured that maybe the bacteria wouldnt yet have had the chance to multiply

you'd probably be alright but you might not want to risk it for a dinner party!

coby · 26/10/2007 16:00

trust me, I used to be a microbiologist for an ice cream manufacturer, don't eat it! Numbers of E coli double every 17 mins and you only need a few to make yourself ill. You may be thinking, since it is unopened it shouldn't have any bugs in it.....um, that might not be the case (not saying any more

Tommy · 26/10/2007 16:04

yeuch coby!!

I have some refrozen ce crem - guess I should chuck it then

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 26/10/2007 16:07

I once used a tub of accidentally thawed (but not refrozen) Green and Blacks to make milk shakes with. Glorious!

coby · 26/10/2007 16:08

yeah, probably a good idea. Some of the really nasty bugs form spores at low temperatures (so that they can survive). If you defrost the ice cream, they come out of spore form and multiply. Then when you refreeze it you have more there waiting to get inside your nice warm tummy. There are certain permitted levels of bugs in ice cream and as long as it stays frozen it is safe that way, but once you start defrosting and refreezing......

does that make sense?

Also ice cream can harbour some real nasties which are especially bad for little ones and the elderly.

No No No No No - not unless you want to be sick.

noonar · 26/10/2007 16:11

coby, thanks for the 'science bit'. thats good to know.

surprisingly, the co op stock their own brand 'truly irrestible'(supposedly) range up the road, so my hot chocolate macaroon pots may yet be saved!

thanks for the advice, all.
