...and I have no idea what it is or how it got there, but it's a miniscule black dot on the tip of my left index finger (I'm left-handed), so working at it with right hand is tricky to say the least. 'Tis throbbing though, but is barely visible to the naked eye. Looks deeper than I want to prod with a pin..........help please.

You poor old thing! Have you tried soaking in hot water? that might draw it out.

RustyBear · 24/10/2007 23:03

Try mixing some grated soap with sugar, put it on a plaster & put it on your finger. Leave it overnight & it will 'draw out' the splinter/thorn or whatever. No idea why it works, but it does.

This tip also deserves fame for the fact that it's the only helpful thing my MIL has ever told me....

Sazisi · 24/10/2007 23:06

I've always had to resort to ripping the skin open wiht a needle ...hope one of the other ways work for you though

Aero · 24/10/2007 23:12

Thanks for speedy replies. Only felt pain in it this evening. Honestly, the dot is soooooooooo teensy, you'd wonder what all the fuss is about.

Saz - have given the ripping it open with a pin a go, but it's deeper than my pain threshold will allow (and I normally get 'em out).

Mml - yes, have done the soaking thing tonight and was planning to do it morning and night over the next few days to draw it out (whatever the little brute is!).

RB - am willing to give this a go as it's not something I've heard of or tried before (typing without index finger is a PITA), esp if it's the only useful tip that has ever come from your MIL, lol.

If you're still suffering, buy some Magnesium Sulphate paste, cover with a loose plaster and wait for foreign body to 'emerge.

Old fashioned remedy but still used today.

fakeblonde · 25/10/2007 12:49

Very very hot flannel.Keep changing it but try and keep it in hot water for about 5 mins and then squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze-.
