How do I stop the GP laughing at me?

Katymac · 24/10/2007 07:40

I have a rotten cold, cough, no voice, ear ache, tooth ache, sinusitus & neuralgia

I know it's only a cold not 'flu but my ear feels like it is about to burst, the gland on that side is the size of a conker & about as hard, plus I can't hear on that side. Also when I turn my head it feels like a zit about to eplode

But I still reckon he will say "it's only a virus" any suggestions to make him take me seriously?

Or am I just a wuss?

(btw been il since a week ago Monday)

It sounds like it's infected and hence bacterial - you'll get antibiotics for the sinusitis if he thinks so.

Oenophile · 24/10/2007 07:51

Poor old Katymac, that does sound truly miserable! and so long to feel ill, too.

I'm sure he will 'take you seriously', after all you are clearly not well! and if he decides it's a virus which antibiotics can do nothing for, will prob prescribe something he hopes will soothe the symptoms. I seem to remember getting something like Sudafed? for my nasty sinusitis.

Sometimes it IS just a matter of time with these things but if he peers into that poorly ear and sees signs of middle-ear infection or suspects some other infection he will prescribe antibiotics which hopefully might speed things up.

Be prepared for him to say 'there's a lot of it going round'... they always seem to say that, don't they?

Hope you feel better soon!

i've had it too, i've got a lump on my head which is aching and a rotten cold/flu type thing.

i'd be interested to hear if you dr does prescribe anything. i haven't bothered going as i thought he'd just say virus and leave it.

poor us

Katymac · 24/10/2007 08:25

Where is your lump SE?

I think it might be an ear infection - I think the sinuses I will just have to put up with (I'll keep doing hand reflexology to keep it at bay)

I feel so miserable & I can't stay off work

katymac - if you have a sinus infection, it does affect your ears too as its all connected. You sounds rotten! {{{{{hugs}}}}

Katymac · 24/10/2007 14:27

Dr's at 5 - we will see if he laughs

sinusitis is horrible. I have never had a doctor laugh at it. I've been prescribed antibiotics if they think it may be bacterial or sudafed to help dry it up otherwise.

panickypatch · 24/10/2007 14:46

the doctor wont laugh at you.
however i think that you need to try and treat the root of the problem. as someone who has suffered horrendous sinusitus, and 24/7/52 cold symptoms for several years, i know just how horrendous it can be. treatment fo rm e, included the followeing.

antibiotics only when particularly bad bleeding.
steam inhalations, or sitting in a steam room, but always drying hair completely afterw ards.
vitamisn and more vitamins
a hat to cover forehead, and head. winter and summer. this last is the most essential thing i found

Katymac · 24/10/2007 14:52

Isn't it funny i think the sinusitus is the least of my problems and that me ear is the most severe pain I have had in years

I am really scared something will pop

This morning there was crusty bits in my ear

He won't laugh, I avoided taking ds to docs recently as I thought I'd get tutted at for being over anxious mum, turned out to be reaccurring tonsilitus so left feeling like s**t mum

panickypatch · 24/10/2007 14:53

try not to stress katy. i'm sure the doc will be able to give you some antibiotics, and perhaps even some painkillers.

modern medicine is wonderful

Katymac · 24/10/2007 15:00

'me ear'

How awful is that

MY ear - of course

Well at the moment amputation seems a good move

Katymac · 24/10/2007 17:40

He didn't laugh

I have an ear infection, a throat infection, a chest infection, my mouth ulsas look infected and he thinks my sinuses need a bit of a hand

I am supposed to take the rest of the week off

pooka · 24/10/2007 17:51

Well that's the answer about how to get a GP to take you seriously! Be very poorly.

Poor you

Katymac · 24/10/2007 17:53

I know - 'but it's only a cold' & 'the Dr will say it's a virus'

OP posts:
pooka · 24/10/2007 18:12

I do hope you feel better soon. Presumably you've got antibiotics which should kick in quickly.
I know exactly the worry about going to doctors, in case you're pegged as a time waster. And perhaps if you had gone a week ago, it would not have been at the stage it is now, so you might have been sent away empty-handed anyway.

Katymac · 24/10/2007 20:47

That's what the Dr said
