Blood test results? Would they have rang by now?

I have convinced myself that I have something serious wrong with me I had my bloods at about 12:20 today and was told they'll be back by 2 o clock in the afternoon tomorrow.

If anything was seriously wrong like cancer etc. would they have rang by now? I've heard of people getting calls a couple of hours later if its very serious.

Do the bloods get sent to a local hospital to be done. If so I doubt they'd be done as quickly as that, they must have hundreds every day. I heard the following day when mine were a bit off. Mine was just that my potassium was too low.

Paddingtonthebear · 15/12/2020 18:36

I don’t understand, are you worried because they said all blood test results generally come back the next day? That doesn’t sound like anything to worry about, it just sounds factual.

prettyinpink23x · 15/12/2020 18:40

I got them done at the hospital @Iwasonceabrownie

No @Paddingtonthebear sorry if I didn't make sense.

I keep telling myself I am going to get an urgent call soon because usually if its something serious they won't leave it to the next day they will ring you hours after. So I'm wondering if I can relax at this point that it's not something serious/life threatening because its been 6 hours now.

What are you worried about, results-wise?

I have full blood tests booked tomorrow btw

JohnMcClane · 15/12/2020 18:49

I've always had to call the surgery to get my results even if there needs to be a follow up appointment, but I doubt they'd have your results yet if you've only had it done today.

prettyinpink23x · 15/12/2020 18:51

I'm worried I have Leukemia or something.

I don't mind waiting for regular abnormal results. I've just read with something very serious like that they ring hours after but not sure if that's actually true.

It can be true that in certain very urgent cases you get called within 48 hours but it isn't necessarily. The labs are busy with COVID and winter pressures at the moment.

Paddingtonthebear · 15/12/2020 19:07

Do you have the symptoms of a serious illness? Has it been mentioned as a possibility?

prettyinpink23x · 15/12/2020 19:09

I have bruising, tiredness and weight loss. Nobody has mentioned it but my symptoms fit.

I had my blood taken at 11.30am and was in hospital that afternoon by 3pm so it does happen yes.

bloodywhitecat · 15/12/2020 19:13

DP's cancer markers (not leukemia) were through the roof and no, he didn't get an urgent call. DD's friend, on the other hand, had a GP turn up on her doorstep to tell her mum to get her to hospital that night (retinoblastoma) after blood tests.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 15/12/2020 19:17

As above I've always had to call for mine, usially told 48 hours, as it happens I had some done on 30th November at the hospital and was told 24 hours, called surgery the next day and was told it takes 2 weeks for zinc and selenium results to come back, so still waiting on those.

It’s basically true

I have leukaemia (CML)

I had bloods taken for something completely different on a Wednesday, assume the seriously anomalous result set off a klaxon in the lab because I got a phone call from the GP on the Thursday, telling me go to haematology at the news test teaching hospital on the Friday morning and the rest is history

Yes, your symptoms could fit, but they are fairly non specific and there’s a good chance it is not a malignancy.

I would say that right now you need to keep off google. Treatments for many kinds of blood cancer have been revolutionised in recent years but there is still lots of older outdated and pessimistic info lurking online and you really don’t want that in your mind right now

Fingers crossed for you, and I’ll keep an eye on this thread in case there’s anything else I can help with. But I hope you get your results soon and there’s no need!

If it is life threatening you can get a same day call .
My brother had a call at 7pm telling him to go straight to hospital - he was on life support the following day .

My MIL had a call at 1 in the morning 2 weeks ago following a blood test earlier that afternoon. She was told an ambulance was on its way , it arrived 11 minutes later . She had a seizure on the way to hospital and was straight into intensive care .

They both lived to tell the tale .

I hope you are OK OP Flowers

prettyinpink23x · 15/12/2020 19:34

Thankyou @SpeckledyHen I really appreciate it.

I have access to my results online and one is back now that I can see. A 'blood clotting screen' and they are all normal but not sure what that means.

That’s good news Pretty . Hopefully you will be able to get an explanation of the tests and results later today and will soon be on the way to a treatment plan and will be feeling better .

DrDavidBanner · 16/12/2020 12:53

Hope things go well for you today OP

prettyinpink23x · 16/12/2020 15:13

Thankyou all, I have the results in I am quite anemic and low on iron but I am going to start treatment for this and there is nothing serious.

Thankyou everyone for your lovely advice and support.

That’s great news OP . Hopefully you will soon be right as rain .

DrDavidBanner · 16/12/2020 17:48

Oh good. Anemia is very treatable and will give you those same symptoms but the not knowing is a worry.
