IBS - buscopan not helping?

EnglishRain · 04/12/2020 03:18

Hello

Has anyone with IBS found that buscopan does not help? I was under the impression that as an antispasmodic it ought to cease the cramps pretty quickly, but it's not working for me.

I've got a four month old and am having more sleepless, painful nights due to IBS than her sleep regression!!

Argh Sad

Try Mebeverine, it's available on prescription or from a pharmacy.

PaperMonster · 04/12/2020 17:57

I never found that any meds helped. Colonic irrigation was my saviour.

EnglishRain · 04/12/2020 20:13

Thanks both, will do some googling for both.

Glad it isn't just me that buscopan doesn't seem to work for, seems like it's very successful for most.

Hi I've had IBS for 10 years so understand the cramps, bloating and indigestion.
Tried Buscopan and Mebeverine without much success. The only thing that actually worked was Ranitidine, but that's not available now.
Amazingly, and on pure impulse I bought some Yakult a month ago and it has worked for me
May be pure coincidence but I ran out for a few days and hsd symptoms again.

Firstly my advice is make sure you have IBS. I was told by a surgeon IBS cannot be diagnosed in a GPs room it can only be diagnosed by colonoscopy.

Elieza · 07/12/2020 17:28

@Sitdowncupoftea
I agree that should totally be the way forward. I’ve had ibs for over twenty years and have never been able to get a referral to anyone in the nhs via my gp.

Apparently the nice guidelines say if there is no blood in the stool then no referral. I gave a sample and no blood so I apparently just have to just suffer.

OP, I kept a food diary and worked out what was setting me off. I found that it takes a couple of days before I get symptoms so I need to work backwards through my diary a couple of days to work out what set me off.

I eat the same safe non-trigger food for days before trying one new food so I’m not guessing between a number of foods as to which triggered me.

I’m sure hormones are involved so that could be what’s causing yours. I hope you can get it sorted soon. It’s so painful.

DidgeDoolittle · 07/12/2020 18:04

I found that my IBS is triggered by anxiety. Even when I didn't realise I was anxious, the onset of IBS was the early warning. I was given a low dose of Propanalol (beta blocker) to take as required. It clears any flare up within days

Sitdowncupoftea · 07/12/2020 18:48

@Elieza Ironically I was diagnosed IBS and told to take Buscupan or colofac. I kept going back to GP was fobbed off. Eventually I went to a different GP he referred me to hospital it was bowel cancer. It was the consultant who told me you cant diagnose IBS unless you have a colonoscopy and have a camera on the bowel. Far too many people get diagnosed with IBS from a GP surgery when its not IBS.

Elieza · 07/12/2020 19:33

@Sitdowncupoftea

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I hope you are doing ok.

You are totally right, it’s disgraceful that nothing gets referred these days. And that’s through two gps practices as I moved house.

I will ask him again. Thanks.

Low FODMAP worked for me.

Then I started Taking kefir regularly- as long as I do this I can pretty much eat what I want.

Kefir is brilliant for IBS.

Hyperfish101 · 07/12/2020 20:22

I was told I had IBS for years. Turns out I have Coeliac disease.

SimplySteveRedux · 09/12/2020 05:47

Apparently the nice guidelines say if there is no blood in the stool then no referral. I gave a sample and no blood so I apparently just have to just suffer.

They've changed now to include if there is a change in bowel habits, pain when opening bowels, abdominal discomfort for a period longer than four weeks.

Coeliac disease is a common differential diagnosis, I wonder how many people have been fobbed off with a bullshit (ahem) IBS dx.

Frenchdressing · 09/12/2020 07:35

CD is really common but also under-diagnosed. .

Collette15 · 05/09/2021 14:38

It doesn’t work for me either

CottonSock · 05/09/2021 14:41

Make sure it's IBS. I had cramps last week and tried the usual drugs including buscopan. When nothing worked I called out of hours. I ended up in hospital and my appendix out. I expected to be sent home with peppermint tea. I'd had the symptoms before too.

niceupthedanceagain · 05/09/2021 14:44

I was told I had IBS, it's ehlers danlos syndrome

nyoman · 05/09/2021 15:04

Can EDS present as IBS? My DD has "IBS". She has done coeliac test and told it's not coeliac disease. Paediatrician then just said it's IBS of unknown cause and dismissed her. My sister has EDS though...

Collette15 · 05/09/2021 15:33

Anyone found anything that really works for diverticulosis?

CottonSock · 05/09/2021 16:43

Funny enough I'm also on a waiting list for rheumatology re EDS. Been waiting 18months so far.

Colonoscopy performed?
nyoman · 05/09/2021 23:47

No- she was 9yo! They wouldn't do anything like that then.

niceupthedanceagain · 06/09/2021 13:12

@nyoman gastric symptoms can be a part of EDS yes. I had terrible heartburn for about 30 years, slow gastric emptying, plus IBS symptoms. You obviously have to have the other things on the EDS checklist too. But yes I was left to work it out by myself after 40 years...

nyoman · 06/09/2021 18:25

Thank you @niceupthedanceagain
I think we need to look into the causes of her IBS, so will raise EDS in family too.

Alibob23 · 13/10/2024 19:57
