Low ferritin anyone ?

My ferritin level is 11 but I’m not anemic as my hb is normal . I have been anemic before though and had cameras up and down . No cause found . If I felt this bad before then I must have forgotten.
How did you feel with low ferritin and did it make you lose weight because my weight is dropping and I feel bloody awful . Been given ferrous fumerate again . Hoping it works fast !

DD' was 6 three months ago. She had 2 episodes of blackouts and felt dizzy. Her other symptoms were nausea, anxiety and knee pain.
The doctor initially thought she had acid reflux so gave her omeprazole. When symptoms did not improve plus the blackout happened theGP ordered vitamin and ferritin test.
After taking tablets for 3 months she is better, nausea was gone after first 15 days and anxiety took another few days.
We are still waiting on a recent blood test result to check levels to see how much improvement is there.
Hope you feel well soon.

Sorry to hear your dd has been ill . I feel a bit dizzy too and horribly anxious . Did your dd have a normal hemaglobin level @Literallyfedup ?

Yes both her Hb and vitamin b12 levels were normal but she still had symptoms so you can have symptoms without being anemic.

OP, do you suffer from heavy periods?

I had borderline ferritin and a low haemoglobin when I was pregnant. Had palpitations as a result of it. I took ferrous fumarate and it brought it back up. My recommendation is to take one tablet once a day. Three times a day is far too much, as there is only so much that your gut can absorb. Haematologists have said the same thing.

I do have fairly heavy periods I think but I am convinced my iron deficiency is down to the lansoprazole I have had to take for years .
I’m having 1 iron tablet twice a day at the moment .

Mine was 11 a couple of years ago although not anaemic. I had significant hair loss (still do Sad ), anxiety, heart palpitations and tiredness. I've been supplementing for ages and it's gone up to...18.

Mitosisgirl · 29/11/2020 09:16

Lansoprazole can reduce iron absorption. It can affect the absorption of the ferrous fumarate.
Might be worth looking into the heavy periods side of things if you haven't already. Perhaps an ultrasound and potentially tranexamic acid to lighten them.

Elasticatedwaist · 29/11/2020 09:18

Sounds like your just not absorbing it @Sometimesonly . Has any of you experienced weight loss due to low iron ?

Iron won't really deal with ferritin levels. You need to take something like Ferrograd.

Mine has just come back as 0 and haemoglobin at low 90s 😱 explains an awful lot of symptoms that I'd put down to stress this year (palpitations, whooshing noise in my ear, feeling bone tired etc)

Sadly no weightloss (but that's not a surprise, nothing helps me lose weight!)

Sometimesonly · 29/11/2020 09:48

No weightloss for me either.

AwFeebs · 29/11/2020 09:52

I also suffered with this, the iron tablets did not agree with me.

I tried using spatone twice a day with OK and my repeat bloods showed my levels were fine so I've stuck with that.

FeatherySquawkington · 29/11/2020 09:58

I had ferritin of 9 and I took one ferrous fumerate tablet twice a day and it went up to 29 after two months.

DH had a blood test, routine due to certain issues, but it came back that he needed ferritin. He has been anxious, very unusual for him, he told me the other day he is awake in the night worrying about what Trump is going to do next. I didn't know low ferritin could cause anxiety. I'm hoping now he has tablets prescribed this will improve.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 30/11/2020 17:23

In January this year my ferritin was 6. I felt like the walking dead. Shortness of breath, fatigue, irritability, hair loss. My periods have been heavy for years and I also have coeliac and hypothyroidism which contribute to low ferritin.. I can't tolerate oral iron so I had an infusion which took my level up to 80. It's dropped down to 35 and my symptoms have returned so I've had another infusion. I'm looking forward to feeling better.
