Gallstones...?

Have had pains just below ribs on right hand side on and off for 6 months or so I would say. Felt it again last night and thought best see GP, they got me in today and took urine sample, booked me in for bloods and referred for a scan. Said he was possibly concerned about my appendix and that needed ruled out, he never mentioned gallstones although some googling this evening has revealed my pain is in that exact location. I'm not experiencing an intense pain just a stabbing pain now and again, it disappears and can be gone for a week then be back again on and off for a day or two. Only other symptoms are I'm definitely experiencing more wind and maybe slightly off my food when I'm in pain. It's not an absolutely agonising pain that gallstones seem to be... has anyone any experience of a slow build up to gallstones or appendix problems? Or any other thoughts on what this could be? Thank you Smile

The agonising pain is when the gallstones decide to move. That feel like giving birth through your chest. Same sort of contractions (ime).

Try to avoid fatty foods and gassy foods like cauliflower as these can trigger a lot of discomfort.

Gallstones pain is like no other pain I have ever experienced, no painkiller touches it, the only thing that helped me was being sick, once I had been sick the pain eased off. I always got the pain late at night or first thing in a morning. I spent hours on my hands & knees with my bum in the air or knelt on the stairs with a hot water bottle under my chest, I couldn't bear my back to touch anything it was so painful. I can recommend getting yourself a choose & book appointment with a surgeon at your local private hospital, from my first pain to getting my gallbladder removed took 8 weeks & I was only in hospital 5-6 hours, went in at lunchtime, was home watching soaps by 7.00pm, drove the next day & was back to normal within 5 days including spending a day out with my partner at a sports event he took part in, I even ate a takeaway the same night I had the op done.

Could be sludge in the gallbladder rather than stones. That wouldn't show up on scans.

I have recently had a scan which showed gallstones after having the agonising labour like pains.

But I do also get times where the pain is not as bad just a dull pain and trapped wind however the dr said these two symptoms would not be due to the gallstones but I’m not sure.

PhylisPrice · 21/11/2020 12:47

Hmmmm thanks all 😊 they are definitely not agonising pains at all, sometimes it gets bad if I move suddenly when it's happening but it goes after a few seconds. Trapped wind thing is interesting though as that's what it can sometimes feel like although breaking wind doesnt make it go away. Doesn't sound like them from what everyone has said then thankfully and if it is hopefully a scan will be picking it up early enough to do something about...

I had them for about a year.. it was rarely AGONISING.. mind you I did pass out once and apparently it was due to pain 🤷🏻‍♀️ But we all have very different pain tolerance.
Fatty foods and dairy was the triggers for me.

After my operation, I woke up and wanted to get up and go home. The doctors were really surprised and told me the man moaning and groaning next to me had the exact same operation and the same medication for pain and it literally just depended on individual tolerance. Have you had an ultrasound?

PhylisPrice · 21/11/2020 13:35

Thanks serial, I haven't had one yet but I was referred yesterday. I think I have quite a high pain tolerance as well, funnily enough I haven't noticed any trigger foods either so it could well be something else....

Good Luck with the scan. Hope it get sorted soon for you.
FYI it’s often people that regularly diet / yo yo weight loss that get them too x

PhylisPrice · 21/11/2020 15:53

Thank you! I don't regularly diet although I probably should 😂 definitely overweight but not by a huge amount!

Omg gallstones are an absolute bitch I had about 5 horrendous episodes with them moving to the point I was in tears and even morphine didn’t touch it. Other then that it was a constant dull ache in my ribs till it got removed. Best thing I ever did

lostandfound55 · 21/11/2020 18:37

@CharlotteRose90 the dr I saw said that I wouldn’t get a constant ache from them however I am sure that must be what’s causing the pain as it’s in exactly the same position.

CharlotteRose90 · 21/11/2020 18:42

Yep that’s what I had once diagnosed a constant dull ache under my right side ribs. Felt really weird till I got used to it and had it taken out.

TheSilentStars · 24/11/2020 06:34

OP, can I ask what the doc said about your appendix?
I went to the GP about 4 weeks ago with what I thought was the beginning of a UTI, pain on right of belly button and just above right hip.
She poked and prodded and did what I realize now was a gallbladder prod (and I went "ouchhhh") but she didn't mention appendix. (Despite me showing her where it hurt)
Drs Google and Mumsnet are now making me wonder. I do get a sort of dull ache under my right ribs, and about 3 times in the past year I've had an excruciatingly bad pain going up into my right chest and even my jaw and teeth. Passes in about half an hour.
The lower right abdomen pain comes and goes, is never excruciating. But pretty much constant.
I had gynaecological ultrasound as went into full blown panic mode about ovaries but that is clear.
