Does anyone suffer with this?

I have b12 deficiency and started with nerve pain in hands and legs a few years ago.

About 6 weeks ago I started getting a crippling pain in my right side of my face. It's horrendous and makes me vomit the pain is so bad. An attack can last hours.
After a week of attacks and feeling like my face is constantly bruised I went docs who did emergency bloods to check for clots.
After they put me on some medication for nerve pain.

I did consider it was toothache but this didn't account for the pain being in my temple.

After another attack Tuesday night the doctor has given me carbamazepine and diagnosed trigeminal neuralgia.

I can feel another attack coming on and have taken some codeine and paracetamol and put an ice pack on my right temple but I don't know what else to do.

Thankyou. Was awake at 2am in pain but have woke up feeling fragile but no pain. My hearing is muffled though but I'd rather that than pain.

I have it. Had it since I was late teens. I'm lucky however in that I very rarely have an attack of it. When I do though, the pain is off the chart. It starts in my right temple and sweeps through my face like I've been struck by lightening. It only lasts about 20 seconds but it takes me to my knees in that time. If it lasted for a few hours, I would throw myself off a bridge because its just not manageable pain.

I have it, I definitely feel your pain OP!
You should get an MRI done, as others have said. Mine showed a cyst pressing against the nerve, unfortunately not easily operable so “managing” with medication for now. I’m on 5x 200mg Carbamazine, plus amitriptyline at night time. Sometimes that covers it, sometimes I’m still in pain.

MrsMcTats · 30/10/2020 08:55

@PurePeppermint could I ask how you're getting on with amitriptyline? My DM has been prescribed it on top of gabapentin and is nervous to take it.

PurePeppermint · 30/10/2020 17:45

@MrsMcTats to be honest I’m not sure it does anything for the pain, but the doc prescribed it for me when I was having such a bad TN attack I wasn’t sleeping. It helps with that! The only side effect I get is a dry mouth, and can’t have any alcohol. I’m only taking the smallest dose of it.

If it offers anyone the slightest bit of hope; I got TM about 5 years ago.

I was on filling replacement no 3 before I suggested to my dentist it wasn't cracked fillings... 🙄

Anyway, now forgive me if I get this the wrong way around; I was put on Carbemazapan, I think, but it didn't touch it, so I was switched to Gabapentin. I hope I got that the right way round!

I had a really unpleasant 3-4 months. Dentist, ENT, X-rays. The drug worked but god, I was fighting to stay awake driving home from work!

I heavily researched what sort of TN I had, and narrowed it down, no specific trigger, slow growing pain, becoming horrendous, slowly receding.

But then, (everything crossed); it's stopped. The occasional twinge but- it appears to have completely stopped.

No idea why, but I'll take it, and hope others will get a good outcome.

I'm hoping the carbamazepine is starting to do its job. Pain Been at a steady 5 for a week now. I increased to 400mg a day last week and today decided to increase to 600mg. Just dizziness and sickness to deal with really but no pain. I am exhausted but very lucky I work from home and have another adult with me all day to help.
