Tinnitus, possible causes? (And will it go away!!)

Hello, I woke up with tinnitus mainly in right ear last week which has been getting progressively worse. Right side of my face feels warm to touch, jaw keeps getting shooting pains and ear pop and crackles when I talk. Been to the GP who said it all looks fine. So what's causing this? I'm not making it up, as I type the side of my face is burning up, all under my ear and jaw and cheek. Tinnitus screaming day and night, I've been struggling to sleep with it and hard to keep panic levels under control.

Any advice?

Tinnitus can and does often go away. I've personally never known it be accompanied by shooting pains though. If it persists maybe consult a dentist with a view to ruling out TMJ etc <a class="break-all" href="https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/temporomandibular-disorder-tmd/www.nhs.uk/conditions/trigeminal-neuralgia/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.nhs.uk/conditions/temporomandibular-disorder-tmd/www.nhs.uk/conditions/trigeminal-neuralgia/
Best wishes.

I have tinnitus and intermittent trigeminal neuralgia but they are not connected. I've never had facial pain associated with my T so if it doesn't ease I'd be asking for another opinion. Good luck.

I have been getting titinus mainly in my right ear but also slightly in my left.Have been seeing an ent privately anyway due to bppv had a hearing test which showed good hearing but slightly worse in my left so having an mri soon to rule out anything else. I have also had a slight discomfort in my left ear and have broken a tooth through teeth grinding, consultant thinks ear problems are due to TMj caused by anxiety because of the bppv. My ears pop sometimes too, I’m constantly listening out for the titinus which I know is making it worse as when I forget about it I don’t hear it at all. Op do you teeth grind or clench at all? Does your jaw click or pop when you open you’re mouth?

@Proudnana3 As time has gone on I think it's pretty obvious that it's a jaw issue causing the tinnitus. My jaw on that side has been very warm to touch and aching/painful. My back teeth on that side don't meet like they used to so there is some inflammation there and keep getting nerve-like shooting pains, clicking when chewing and popping sounds in that ear. This knowledge hasn't helped though as I'm now feeling pretty hopeless that the TMJ can't be treated enough to get rid of the tinnitus - technically the tinnitus was my first clue that something wasn't right with my jaw so I'm presuming it'll be the last thing to go, if it ever does.

I'm definitely a jaw clencher - I've noticed myself doing this over the last few months and quite often wake up clenching. Also popular sitting position is resting chin on hand with elbow on knee. I've stopped that and making a big effort to keep jaw relaxed.

My dentist is making me a mouth guard and I am taking 20mg of Amitriptyline, hopefully that will help. I think until I’ve had the mri though and ruled out anything sinister the anxiety will continue therefor so will the titinus. I don’t get jaw pain as such but when the consultant felt my jaw he said definite tmj as jaw was dislocating as I opened and closed my mouth. I also get tension in my head and neck which I believe is all related. My titinus gets louder when I yawn or stretch my neck too. If you read the info on tmj and titinus it does say it should improve once tmj is treated so 🤞it will get better.

I'm not anxious that something is wrong per se, I'm mostly anxious about the tinnitus and that I might have it forever Sad I really miss being able to sit in the quiet and I really really miss being able to go to bed and hear nothing. So much.

@FeatherySquawkington hi! Just wondering did it ever go away?

Starrr123 · 08/03/2022 20:05

@Proudnana3 how are you now ? I hd all the symptoms you had xx

Proudnana3 · 09/03/2022 11:19

Fortunately yes, my mri was all clear. I started taking fluoxetine for the anxiety and also started hrt which has made a huge difference. Seems my hormones was causing anxiety and all the other symptoms xx
