Endoscopy tomorrow

Hi,

I have an endoscopy tomorrow afternoon.

I would like to have it done without sedation, just with the throat spray, because I need to be able to drive and go to work the next day. I’m a bit scared though!

Had anyone had this done without sedation and the procedure been ok?

Thanks

Yep without sedation. Was totally fine just stay calm and breathe. Don't get me wrong it's odd and not particularly nice but over in under 5 minutes. Good luck for your results x

HappyThursdays · 19/10/2020 21:11

Yes I've had 2 this way. I asked to see the screen as I thought it would distract me (it did). A very kind nurse spoke to me throughout but tbh I probably would have been fine with silence!

Maybe try and think of something you need to do that will keep you occupied in your head for 5 mins. Last one I had done was before a holiday (that long ago!) so I was doing a packing list in my head! Maybe do a Xmas list in your head?

There's oxygen in your nose so even if it feels like the tube in your throat is large, you never actually feel you can't breathe!

Stygimoloch · 19/10/2020 21:13

@Mondaymanic thank you for replying! Good to hear. I thought I was ok about it but tonight I’m feeling very nervous. Wish it was done.

Not surprised you are nervous - it is a nerve wracking thing! Luckily it barely takes any time so it's over quite quickly. I think the whole preparation and anticipation is far worse. I kept thinking how many they must do a day!

Also you can try and calm your breathing by breathing through your nose and get your heartbeat down - I was trying to see how I could do that while it was going on!

Stygimoloch · 19/10/2020 21:51

@HappyThursdays thanks so much. That’s really helpful. I was worried about feeling like I couldn’t breathe. Will make sure to get those deep breaths in!

Good luck OP Smile

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 19/10/2020 21:54

I hope it goes well for you.

I’m having one on Thursday so would you mind updating after? X

Stygimoloch · 19/10/2020 22:09

@CharityPecksniff thank you!

@ChittyChittyBoomBoom of course! I’ll update tomorrow.

Thank you, it will be really useful to hear from you. Good luck!

CambsAlways · 19/10/2020 22:33

Wishing you lots of luck, I’m due for one in the not too distant future but having to have ct scan first, may I ask is yours due to having reflux and pain probs

Stygimoloch · 19/10/2020 22:38

@CambsAlways yes reflux and the issues that come with it - sore throat, croaky voice, occasional breathlessness.

I was supposed to have this back in March but it was cancelled due to Covid. My symptoms seem to come in cycles and it was really bad then, I struggled to eat etc. Symptoms have now eased a little but still there. I want it done so the next time it worsens, I don’t automatically think it’s something dreadful!

Good Luck Op, you will be fine.

Was not my best experience but not at all the worst by far & was over so quickly.

CambsAlways · 19/10/2020 22:49

I know exactly what you mean, I’m sick to death of it, choking on certain foods, breathlessness, pain heartburn awful, just want to find out what is going on, getting awful nausea

Inspirationpending · 19/10/2020 22:59

Hi op
I had one last month without sedation
Closed my eyes and concentrated on breathing through my nose

Just at the point I thought I couldn’t do any more, the lovely nurse who stroked my hair the whole time, told me they were bringing the tube back up

Was lovely to leave almost straight afterwards, slightly dry throat but that was it

Good luck tomo x

Babymamaroon · 19/10/2020 23:03

Good luck for tomorrow!

I had one but I wanted to be heavily sedated as I'd previously had the spray and I did not like it at all.

I was wiped out that afternoon but was fully back in action by the following morning.

I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine and it'll be over before you know it. I hope you get a good result Thanks

Stygimoloch · 20/10/2020 15:51

Thanks for the support everyone. It’s all done! Have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and nothing more sinister which is a relief.

@ChittyChittyBoomBoom it was fine. I just had the throat spray and didn’t feel any pain at all. It is a very strange feeling and not particularly pleasant but it’s not painful or awful and it was so quick! As soon as the camera is out, I literally felt back to normal straightaway.

I’ve got a bit of a sore throat now but that all. About to tuck into something because I’m starving!

Ahh well done Smile and glad it wasn't anything bad xx

HappyThursdays · 20/10/2020 17:56

Well done xx

Babymamaroon · 20/10/2020 18:08

Great news on every countGrin

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 22/10/2020 18:57

I’m just sitting and waiting to go in for mine 😬.

Stygimoloch · 27/10/2020 11:45

@ChittyChittyBoomBoom how did it go? Hope all was well.

OP posts:
ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 27/10/2020 11:55

Yes thanks @Stygmoloch, results were fine but I didn’t get on with the procedure very well 🙈. There was MUCH wretching and I kept burping all of the air out. I think the size of the tube/camera surprised me too! Ah well, all done now x

Stygimoloch · 27/10/2020 12:01

@ChittyChittyBoomBoom great news about the results. I know exactly what you mean about the size of the camera. I thought it would be a tiny, almost wire size type of thing. It really made me wretch too when it first went down. Not pleasant. But quick! Glad it’s all over for us both now.

OP posts:
ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 27/10/2020 12:27

Yes! It definitely wasn’t wire sized 🙈. Good job it was over so quickly.
