Hi I had the pneumonia vaccination years ago.
Can't remember exact when.

Is this a one off vaccination ?

Or could you have boosters?

This one-off vaccination is very effective at protecting you against serious forms of pneumococcal infection

www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/when-is-pneumococcal-vaccine-needed/

Although, if you have serious health problems, your hospital consultant may write to the the GP and request that you have it again.

ShatnersBaboon · 12/10/2020 18:04

Yes, just the once thank God! I felt like shit after having it a few years ago.

Riv12345 · 12/10/2020 18:16

Thank you for your replies
I did have it a few years ago

But I'm mild asthmatic thought about asking my GP if it is worth having a booster as worried about Covid in the winter months plus I work on a hospital ward with very vulnerable patients

Check with your GP. I remember reading about boosters , can't remember the criteria or guidelines.

Plussizejumpsuit · 13/10/2020 21:25

Yes it is one off. I had mine last year and my arm really hurt and I felt like I was getting ill. So thank god its a one off!

caringcarer · 13/10/2020 23:54

I thought the pneumonia vaccine was only given to those over 70 years. That is what they said sty GP's as there is not enough for everyone to get one. My dh is immunosuppressed so we asked but told no.

FairFriday · 14/10/2020 00:01

Doesn’t it depend? I had one recently and the pharmacists said it was a one off but my MIL has gone for a booster (but she is 75).

housemdwaswrong · 14/10/2020 00:02

@caringcarer I'm immunosupressed too, and I had it this year. May be worth double checking/ being insistent. This from the nhs wales website:

@fairfriday yes. Usually one off, but possible 5 year boosters...I know of a few people that have it annually but that's v. unusual.

caringcarer · 14/10/2020 09:20

I will ask at chemist as they are very obliging.

FadedRed · 14/10/2020 09:29

It’s usually one vaccination, but a small number of people require boosters, the above .gov.uk is the chapter from the NHS guidance.

FairFriday · 14/10/2020 11:48

When I got my shot the pharmacist said that there was 2 versions and the one they have had fewer variations of the bug in it (excuse my highly non technical explanation). My jab had less of the bugs.
