Severe Headache Advice

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice. My partner (early 30's) has had a fever/headache since wednesday, I would say he's probably got a bad cold/ mild flu.
It's definitely not covid, had a negative test and the doctor has run through all his symptoms and doesn't believe so.

The thing that's really worrying me is his headache, it's very, very intense at the back of his head and painkillers aren't managing it at all. He spoke to a doctor yesterday who advised to take codeine, this helped briefly but then made him sick and he's at the point he can't take any painkillers at all but the pain is unbearable.

I don't know if he should be getting checked out, he's rarely ill and never gets headaches so this is very unusual for him.

Does anyone have any advice? We don't want to waste time but the headache is getting worse and moving to the front of his head and it's really worrying me.

He can move his neck although it feels slightly stiff, and he can look at light. So not typical meningitis signs. His fingers feel cold but his feet are warm.

I'd take him to A& E as a matter of urgency.

Thank you, we've spoke to 111 yesterday and they didn't suggest much, I've been trying to talk him into A&E but I think i'll make him go now!

Please ask him to head to A&E. Person i worked with had a similar sudden onset bad headache at the back of their head. in their case in turned out to have been a tiny bleed.

Any sudden new intense kind of headache is worth getting checked on. It could be something as simple as a really bad tension headache to hidden problems with blood pressure to the much rarer things as happened above.

Best to let a medically qualified bod at A&E rule out the rare 'just in case' by taking a look at him. They really will not keep him in A&E longer than he needs to at the moment.

thank you so much, he's been to a&e and being kept in, think it's an infection. Hopfully won't be anything too serious x

Codeine is not a good drug for headaches. It can cause a rebound headache actually making the original heache worse. It doesnt sound much like flu or the cold. What is his tolerance to light. Any neck stiffness. Could it be a sinus headache. To be honest id call a pharmacist for advice first.

Mummyofbananas · 12/10/2020 08:08

Thanks everyone, they think it was a bad infection plus severe dehydration so really glad he went to A&E now. They were checking for meningitis but luckily not that x
