What exactly is a US Pelvis TA scan?

I have seen a GP regarding a new pain I have been getting. It's just right of my belly button and it is very strong very tender pain, it almost stops my breath. It has been really affecting my days as sometimes it's several times a day. It only lasts a second BUT it feels so so painful, like when a dentist touches the nerve at the end of a tooth canal. It's nothing that I've experienced before. The GP has referred me for a scan which I assumed will be of all abdominal organs. But from the caption of the hospital letter is seems like it will be only reproductive organs and kidneys which is not where the pain is. It says it will be:
US Pelvis TA scan.
Please can anyone explain to me if I'm wrong? I can't believe I have to wait 6 weeks for the wrong scan 🙈, I'm so scared what will happen to me.

Ultrasound pelvis trans abdominal scan I'd think

VeggieSausageRoll · 05/10/2020 22:29

US = ultrasound
Pelvis = they're scanning your lower abdomen
TA = Trans abdominal - they're scanning through your abdomen (rather than trans vaginally for example)

It's a standard abdominal ultrasound, with the gel and the little probe

MajesticWhine · 05/10/2020 22:29

US - ultrasound
TA = transabdominal - ie. not through your vagina - so that's a good start.

Elizaeliza · 05/10/2020 22:29

TA means trans abdominal I think so pelvic uss scanning from the outside as opposed to trans vaginal where they would put the probe inside you x

CrunchyNutNC · 05/10/2020 22:30

Ultrasound pelvis transverse abdominal maybe? I.e. an ultrasound of your abdomen across the way, taken from the outside.

Hopefully a radiographer or medic will be along soon!

This, basically

What exactly is a US Pelvis TA scan?

Thanks for the replies. What I need to know is if they will scan

  1. all abdominal organs (which is what I need), or
  2. they will only want reproductive organs and kidneys (which I suspect Pelvic stands for, but that will not help as the paint is middle abdomen near navel) ??? 🙈

They will scan your uterus/ fallopian tubes.
Then your kidneys, your ureturs down to your bladder.

Im assuming you're wanting scans more like your gall bladder/ liver etc. Thats not done on a pelvic scan.

Thank you! I was hoping I was wrong... That was what I gathered from what I googled, I'm afraid you have confirmed my fear. What a mess! I think I may have to find a private consultant, I've waited six weeks for this scan, I can't believe it. 😫😟😟

6 weeks really isn't a long time to wait for a non urgent scan, particularly in the middle of a pandemic.

Sonographer here. I can’t speak for all trusts but where I work the sonographer would be expected to ask about your symptoms and ask you to show them where your pain is before scanning and if it was the middle we would use our clinical judgement and probably do a full abdominal scan regardless of what had been requested. If it helps you could always call your GP with the letter and check though.
