Help! I am obese and disgusted in myself, but still can't stop eating! Too easy to reach for biscuits/chocolate. Can't not buy them as dd and dh shouldn't need to suffer just because I can't say no. So looking for some tips on how to lose weight. Dinner ideas and snack ideas please. Thank you

Great you are taking control.

Have you thought about using the 5:2 diet as a kick start? That's 600 cals a day for 2 days a week. It's the Fast Diet book by Michael Moseley.

It's worth a try.

My own way of keeping slim is to really limit all carbs, hardly any sugar and no sweetened drinks or snacks like crisps etc.

Not sure if this would work for you, but my average day looks like this. I rarely eat red meat so most main meals are fish or chicken.

1 or 2 poached eggs 1 slice wholemeal toast OR 100gms full fat plain Greek Yoghurt with berries OR 30gms porridge with milk, and berries

Lunch- salad with tinned fish or meat or cottage cheese
Piece fruit and yoghurt if not had any for breakfast
OR 300mls soup- fresh from carton or usually homemade

Dinner- fillet of fish (salmon, sea bass, cod, haddock) oven baked with some fresh veg ( 2 portions at least), or stir fry ( only 2 tablespoons rice) , lean meat and veg, roast chicken dinner, homemade shepherds pie,
Piece of fruit

I allow myself 1 square of dark choc a day.

At a weekend I might have a small portion of a pudding but during the week I don't eat cakes or biscuits.

If you are starving have an apple or orange - only about 60 cals and quite filling.

I don’t eat much yet still overweight by about a stone. Where am I going wrong? Here’s my average daily diet: Breakfast one thick slice bread with scrape of butter and marmite, lunch plain jacket no butter, tea pasta or cheese/beans on toast. One biscuit per cup of tea (3 cups) no sugar. Yogurt for afters. I don’t eat meat fish or eggs. Where am I going wrong?

@Oldmum55 - eat more protein and vegetables. Measure what you eat and count calories. Use an online calculator to work out your TDEE and then eat fewer calories every day in order to be in calorie deficit.

Oldmum55 · 05/10/2020 09:03

@wowfudge thanks! Didn’t know about the TDEE great idea. I find it’s more difficult if you are veggie/vegan.

@Oldmum55 you are eating too many carbs in a day. Bread for breakfast, potato/bread for lunch and pasta for evening and 3 biscuits, not deal breakers on their own but all together they are. I would cut them out as much as you can to drop the stone.

Do you not eat meat/fish/eggs because you can't or you just don't cook them?

I'd be looking at something along the lines of
Breakfast - porridge, granola, eggs with beans, bacon/sausage, just protein
Lunch - soup, salad with some protein,
Dinner - protein with veg, mainly greens as a lot of the others have sugar in them, also plenty of water as it's essential for burning off fat from food and drink, as well as stored fat.

OP, hope that helps you too. Maybe take some photos of yourself, I find that helps and you can then get on a health kick and take some more a month later, when you start to see the difference it spurs you on. drink plenty of water as it fills you up apart from being good for other things.

OP if you have a lot to lose have you considered WW/Slimming World? I’ve got friends who had great results with them, sometimes you need the help of a group to keep you going. Not sure how they operate at the moment with Covid.

"You're eating too many carbs" is too simplistic: we lose weight by expending more calories than we take in. We've got no idea how many calories the poster needs or is getting. A balanced diet is the best way to make sure your body gets the nutrients it need, that includes unrefined carbs. Protein has the same calorific value per gram as carbs, but is harder for the body to digest and therefore makes you feel fuller for longer. For that reason eating more protein makes cutting overall calories easier.

2me2u2u2me · 05/10/2020 10:18

@wowfudge you missed the end of my sentence out, conveniently, I said you're eating too many carbs "in a day" you do need carbs in your diet, you don't need them every meal, and I also said for her to cut them out as much as she can, not completely.

It's also well known that carbs also cause the body to store extra water, which if you're trying to lose weight, you don't want.

This wasn't a long term recommendation, it was a short term one for her to loose a few pounds.

wowfudge · 05/10/2020 10:30

@2me2u2u2me - my bad, I only saw your first paragraph. We don't know the pp's height, weight or current activity level and monitoring portion size by counting calories is key, whatever you are eating, if you want to lose weight.

2me2u2u2me · 05/10/2020 10:35

@wowfudge thanks, no problem. And yes agree re: height, weight, activity etc.

Unfortunately I can't be bothered to count calories so SW or WW wouldn't be good for me, I have to cut carbs and alcohol as much as possible, it's all or nothing with me, no way can I just have one glass of wine, or one square of chocolate Hmm Grin
