Kidney infection

I am on my 8th week of a kidney infection I have been so unwell.
I have been in and out of hospital and on my 4th type of antibiotic nothing seems to clear it Anything I have read says it should have cleared up after 2 weeks! I'm having to take periods off work as I can't get out of bed some days worse than others. No pain relief seems to help!
I just wondered has anyone experienced a kidney infection that's taken weeks to recover from?

I think they need to upgrade you to some more investigatory studies and not just keep banging on with antibiotics that arent working. 8 weeks is ridiculous, they should have sorted it out by now. Are you/they sure its a kidney infection?

babymanc · 27/09/2020 20:59

When I was admitted 8 weeks ago they did a ct scan which showed the infected kidney. 2 weeks later I went back as felt really unwell they did an ultrasound which showed no cysts or anything. I'm having to wait two more weeks for a urologist appointment

Is there anyway to hurry up the two week wait? It sounds like you are very unwell.

babymanc · 27/09/2020 21:38

Don't know whether to just go to a&e!

If you are so unwell, you should go. You shouldn't be suffering for 8 weeks without getting any better.

Hi, I had a really bad infection last year- it took me 6 months to recover. Diclofenac is the only thing that helped with the pain. After many scans ( with dye) they found an abnormality with my kidney, after a long time saying it was just an infection, and now I’m waiting for surgery to remove a kidney. I would definitely ask for a second opinion as in my case something serious was missed despite a lot of investigation. Call your GP and ask to be referred to a hospital with a big renal dept and see what they make of it.

babymanc · 27/09/2020 22:05

Oh no that's awful I feel like that's the experience I'm getting I might even go private just to be seen quicker! Hope you don't have to wait too long for surgery

You might get seen quickly on the NHS - I’m getting all my scans very quickly as lots of people don’t want to go to hospital at the moment. After my last telephone appointment with the consultant I got 3 different investigations within 2 weeks. It’s very odd. However, I can’t get my surgery till next year as they are only doing emergencies at the moment, but at least I know what’s wrong now and why I have pain.

babymanc · 27/09/2020 22:14

It is the not knowing hopefully they will get me some tests organised in the next few weeks as I just can't imagine feeling like this for 6 months must have been awful for you

If you can afford to go private for a consultation, I would. There is more time for them to look at you properly and think about the whole picture rather than a quick check as they have a waiting room full and need to pee because they havent had a break in 4 hours. And you sound like a complicated case that needs in depth assessment and proper thought

Torvean32 · 28/09/2020 00:56

Id call 111. You should get to speak to a Dr or nurse. Then they may ask you to be assessed.

babymanc · 28/09/2020 16:21

Thanku everyone for replies I am back in hospital awaiting more tests hopefully I will get some answers x

@babymanc how are you now?

babymanc · 29/10/2020 21:43

Hey ah thankyou for asking,I spent a week in hospital in the end and all results came back clear. It's still been three months since having a kidney infection and still getting pain under my ribs. Each week I'm getting a little better but still got a long way to go! Just want to be back to normal!

Hi op I'm currently in hospital since Monday with the most horrendous infection that caused my body to go into shock!! I'm on intravenous antibiotics and up until early hours of this morning I was still nauseous and getting the quick shooting pain in my side.
The pressure has me gone crazy but slowly improving, had a ultrasound loads of blood taken and only thing that I've been told is I had a full kidney when bladder was full but normal when bladder emptied and not concerned.
Worse pain op omg I'm actually scared to leave hospital now incase it comes back I couldn't handle it again.

babymanc · 30/10/2020 04:46

Just make sure you get follow up appointments for 6 weeks and that they see improvements in your bloods before your discharged the first time I was In I came home too soon
