Hi, just hopng someone can put my mind at ease, my dd, 4 yrs has had swollen glands in her neck for some time now. She has had a cold on and off now for the past few weeks, i think she's getting better then she starts coughing again. She goes to nursery so i know that they continually pick up bugs which she passes on to her baby brother and he passes back to her. I took her to our gp 3 weeks ago to get the glands checked out and he said that they were not cause for concern at all, he checked under her arms and her groin. She did'nt have any under her arms but did in the groin. I asked him how long would they stay swollen for and he said they could remain like that until about 2 weeks until after the symptoms have gone. They have gone down a little but i still cant help worrying, i tend to get very anxious over my kids health and always imagining the worst.

I don't know whether i should take her back to the gp now or to wait until her cold symptoms have gone and see how the glands ar then. Just hoping that someone can relate to this.

Thanks in advance for any replies,
Tracey.

My boys have both had colds, coughs and various other ailments almost constantly since beginning of term. If the symptoms are cold and cough, you will just have to wait for them to take their course - a cough is your body's way of getting rid of bad germs.
Is she relatively ok in herself? If she is I would leave it for a while until you see gp again but if she gets temperature or any other extra symptoms then go back. If it's any consolation, practically every child I know has something at the moment & I've got a throat infection and an exam on Thursday!!So try not to worry too much

ds3 had swollen glands in his groin last winter, but the GP said that as he also had glands swollen in other places - she found them in the neck,it was likely to be infection - if it was just one set then she would be more worried. Basically I was told the same thing - wait until 2 weeks after infection and if no change take him back. They did go away. I'm pretty laid back about my kids health but these did look scary and I immediately thought the worst.

kayla'smum - I wouldn't worry too much - there are a load of bugs around at the moment. As your GP says, her glands may remain swollen for a little while even if the other symptoms have gone.
Try and make sure she eats healthily and gets enough sleep - that will help with her health in general.
