Quick help! receding hair in children???

just washing ds1's hair, who is just 9 and have noticed on one side of his head, the hair has receded right back about 2 inches from forehead to eaar backwards and he just has fluffy hair where it used to be. please give me some idea as to why as its freaking me out as no idea why. his hair otherwise is very thick, he doesnt play with his hair and doesnt use any weird lotions or potions on it.

My neighbours 2 year old had a big patch where the hair gradually fell out and was all fluffy and downy - and it was a type of alopecia - an auto immune thing. After about 3 months the hair grew back and it hasn't happened again. The dr could tell what it was because of the shape of the hair or something - i can't remember exactly but can find out if you think it is that. I'd take him to the gp who will be able to give you some advice.

I wsa going to suggest alopecia too. He has had a viral infection recently?

Best take him to the GP.

oh crikey, i hope it doesnt start falling out in clumps. do you know if he/she had to take any medication or did it come back on its own?

no infections at all. they are touchwood otherwise very healthy kids

There are apparently different types of alopecia - neighbours child had kind where she just lost hair in a patch and it grew back - not the total hairloss kind. The dr told her that the only treatment was steroids, but not really necessary for this type, so she didn't take anything and it didn't last long - is all fine now. Try not to worry, just see dr.

This child has eczema and those spot things - a viral thing can't remember what it's called - and apparently it means her auto immune system is just a bit stressed and this is another way it can come out.
