Hi there, My DS has got tonsilities and refuses to take his penicillin (cant blame him smells and taste YUK).. I have tried mixing in juice and adding into yougurts etc, but the smell and taste just puts him off, we have to give him this 4 times a day and when we do its a fight....can anyone out there give me some tips on making this easier for him and us....he is suffering enough without having the tantrum in taking this, He is good with other stuff, takes them off the spoon fine, dont want to spoil that.........all ideas welcolme..... Kitty, do you have an oral syringe? Most chemists stock them - it's the only way to get very young children to take medicine ime.

There is a technique to using them though!

kitty, sorry no advice, but just wanted to show my sympathy, dd (3) had this a couple of weeks ago and had to take the yellow penicillin 4 times a day and she HATED it to, there is no point trying to get the medicice changed either, i did try but was told the only substitute tastes even worse, as awful as it sounds your just gonna have to pin him down and force feed him, although mercys idea may make this easier.

Ds - 16 mths- had an ear infection the other week and the only way we could get the stuff down him was with an oral syringe (its vile tasting stuff) it wasn't pleasant and we did bribe him with a choccy button afterwards (probably shouldn't have but it was awful and for once we did think the poor boy should have some comfort treats!!). Good luck.

Hi all, thanks for the threads, we are using the oral syringe at the mo, but he just screams and gets really worked up, I have to have my partner hold him, I feel like im forcing him, but he really need's to have the stuff, It's ok when my partner is around but im not sure how im going to manage the two during the day?????....Im also doing the bribe thing afterwards......

I hold them one arm behind my back, head in crook of arm and hold their other arm while i hold the syringe in the corner of their mouth at the back (almost diagonally across so they can't push it out with their tongue and sort of wedge it by their teeth so they can't shut their mouth with the arm im holding the syringe with my arm is kind of blocking their legs from kicking me (god it sounds like i'm evil but honestly they have to have it and you know its because you love them and want to make them better) anyway i squirt a bit in and wait for them to swallow then squirt another bit in (wihout taking syringe out or they spit it out) then afterwards give cuddles/ dummy/ juice.

My little boy has had to take penicillin quite a few times..there seems to be a thin yellow version and a thick pinky version...yellow one is vile, I tried it, bitter and leaving a nasty aftertaste..my boy absolutly will not swallow it, tears, tantrum, spitts it out..not what you need when he is already ill..I asked the doctor for a new perscription for the other type which is a sweet strawberry flavour...no problems at all, just carried on the dose minus the few failed doses.

pneumalifenewname · 08/10/2007 09:54

does he use a dummy?sometimes you can squirt down the side of that while they suck otherwise brute force seems to be the only way - huge cuddles afterwards of course!

Hi there, Seem to have mastered the syringe, managed yester all 4 doses, still with tears and a bit spitting out, today so far ok but not the best, ist one lost that all, spat it right out, however he did manage a little of the next one, and at lunch well took it all, after a good cry.. here's to the next one, hopefully that will go well if not Dad will be in and its hold down.....yeah have to agree with you all sound terrible having to force the medician down them and holding them down, but its for the best..... have asked the doctors about changing it and they said this one is the best... will carry on, but if i ever need again will be asking for different stuff...
Thanks again for all you help in this matter
