goiter.

I have a 4cm goiter with normal thyroid function test results. I also had raised
d-dimer levels.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? I'm waiting for my hospital appointment to come through, and it seems to be taking forever.

Hi kimlo, this is exactly what I’ve got. I have normal bloods although all my symptoms for under active thyroid. My goiter feels all over my thyroid- scared. Luckily doctor has referred me and my appointment is early October. No idea what to expect. I hope yours turned out ok.

it was a multinodular retrosternal goiter, the largest nodule was 4cm. A long story short I ended up with a fna that showed follicular cells so I had a hemithyroidectomy. I ended up with a diagnosis of a follicular tumour of unknown malignant potential. Which isn't much of a diagnosis really more of a we don't know.

I'm due for another ultrasound soon.

I hope your appointment went ok. Nodules are common and most turn out to be nothing.

Hi Kimlo, I’ve had my appointment & ultrasound since I posted that. I’ve got a big clear fluid cyst on the left side of my thyroid. I didn’t have a biopsy but I do have another ENT appointment. I really hope they remove it. It’s made my thyroid enlarged & I’ve got over active symptoms now.

god knows what’s going to happen. I hope you are okay, I hope your ultrasound is clear for you. I don’t know much about thyroids so was really surprised.

If it's large and you want it removed then I would think that they probably will remove it. The reason mine was removed was because of the fna results, but actually it was going to be removed whatever the results because of swollowing issues. He said during my inital phone consultation that he would have taken it out if I didn't like the way it looked. But actually because it was retrosternal you couldn't see it. It was picked up incidently on a unrelated ct scan.

I'm ok, on 75 of levothyroxine now. I'm more relaxed about the scan, my surgeon seemed pretty confident that it would be ok and checking again was just making sure. I think after I have that and see my surgeon I'll ebd up beong discharged.

I really hope so because it makes me feel poorly. Did you have it removed on NHS?. This is my worry that they won't. That is good that you feel more relaxed and least you will not have to worry about it after you been discharged.

yes it was all on the nhs. If you tell the consultant your reasons I'm sure he'll listen.

Thank you Kimlo, I was not sure. That is good to know. I hope you are okay now, I really hope I get mine out. I wish you all the best. x

I have two. One on the left is nearly 6 cm- bigger than an egg. One in the right is about marble sized. They came up 18 months ago. Today I had to vomit food up because I couldn’t swallow. I’m worried they have grown. The one on the left was already bigger than an egg….

Hi Shadowboy, Why won't they remove them? That sounds dangerous!. Sounds like they have grown if it is making you sick?. When was the last time you had them looked at?

Shadowboy · 15/10/2022 18:04

They haven’t removed them so far because they are very very close to my vocal chords and my job requires me to speak loudly. It would be a risk… I have an ENT appointment in a fortnight so we will see if the cost benefit ratio has changed
