DH is crying.
He has had tooth pain for weeks.
He has been to the dentist several times.
Has had two root canals on wednesday.
The dentist has said he should have no pain now.
He has........the same pain he has had for weeks.

He has seen the gp for pain relief..

NHS direct say take paraceetamol and ibuprofen.

My mum had a very similair problem, she went to see another dentist who discovered, the pain was'nt where she thought it was, it was referred pain, has the dentist checked his whole mouth, not just where he says it hurts?

TaLcsFromTheCrypt · 06/10/2007 11:21

thanks for responding TF...yep, he checked them all, he has asked the dentist to remove 2 of his teeth.... originally they worked on the wrong tooth.

The dentist said that his teeth are now ok and refuse to do anything else!!

Thanks

I had a lot of pain after my last root filling although the dentist said I shouldn't have. It did go away after about 10 days as I recall. I took ibuprofen etc. and also salty luke warm mouth rinses seemed to help (this may have been a placebo effect though - I wanted to feel like I was doing something!). clove oil can also be effective (but I couldn't get any).

if he's still in pain at the end of next week he should go back to the dentist. at least, I would.

SenoraPostrophe · 06/10/2007 11:22

he asked the dentist to remove the tooth? did the dentist not make that decision?

Thanks Senora, he has only been rinsing with brandy! lol!

He has been taking Tramadol and ibuprofen.

I will make him rinse in salt water.

I have told him that it could take 10 days...and he's just said that gives him some hope...that it's just the healing process.

Thankyou!

It's certainly not uncoomon to have some discomfort/mild pain after a root canal.

Did the dentist xray it when he went back? If not then he really should, just to make sure all is OK.

If so, the dentist will have seen if there are any problems.

He can take paracetamol every 4 hours, then nurofen 2 hours after that, then paracetamol 2 hours after nurofen & so on, so he has painkillers every 2 hours. GP not great with dental pain to be honest!

What is the pain like? Is it there all the time? Worse with hot & cold stuff? On biting?

TaLcsFromTheCrypt · 06/10/2007 11:28

Ta Aimsmum...he did see another dentist..he begged her to take them out.
He was in there for 50 mins

Yes severedhandcastles [lol at your name, he had x rays...and antibiotics about 6 weeks ago.
I have never seen him in this much pain.

He also has co codamol and diclofenic for the pain.
I think he was expecting it to have stopped hurting a little and not got worse.

He has perked up a little in the last 30 mins though..

going to the park...will try to distract him

I had a root canal, resulting in immense pain afterwards. Went back to the dentist who after a bit more looking descovered I had three roots to the tooth, not just two.

Bloody ouch. I really sympathise. I would get another dentist if I were you. Or get your doctor to refer you to a dental hospital.

severedhandcastles · 06/10/2007 11:36

He has been in this pain for 6 weeks?

TaLcsFromTheCrypt · 06/10/2007 11:36

Ouch!

Ok, thanks.
Will tell him this.
Thanks.
Fingers crossed it's not that.

Thanks for all your responses......

Sorry, wanted to ask, when were the root canals completed?

TaLcsFromTheCrypt · 06/10/2007 11:38

yes SHC... not constantly,
the antibiotics helped it for a while.

Apparently he had a 'very wide root?'!

OP posts:
TaLcsFromTheCrypt · 06/10/2007 11:39

he had nerves removed a few weeks ago

If the root canals were done 6 weeks ago & he is still in that much pain, something is not right!

I can understand a bit of dull pain still, but not this much!

I think he needs to go back, probably not what you want to hear!

In all my years dental nursing I have not known this type of pain 6 weeks on. I have had 3 myself & not had this!

severedhandcastles · 06/10/2007 11:43

Oh, ok crossed posts!

Well then yes, give it a few more days. It should clear up no problem!

TaLcsFromTheCrypt · 06/10/2007 11:51

Thanks SHC

It first got really bad August bank holiday...had to ring NHS direct.

I think he is feeling a little less panicky about it.

Thankyou

It is horrible, I do sympathise!

I hope he is feeling better soon, but if not then deff see the dentist again!
