Painkillers causing stomach cramps?

KedsAndTubeSocks · 31/08/2020 13:53

I'm recovering from a minor operation and have been give cocodamol & naproxen. The operation was on my face, so no reason to believe the op itself is the problem. I have had sharp stomach cramps since I got out of hospital. Does anyone know if it's likely to be either of these meds, or the GA, or something else.
I'll switch to paracetamol & ibuprofen if I have to, but I'd really like the extra pain relief, if at all possible.

Were you not given Omeprazole to take before the Naproxen? Sounds like you need it. Can you ring your GP surgery and ask?

Naproxen destroys my guts. I need Omeprazole and Mebeverine to take it.

Meanwhile maybe stick to co-codamol and ibuprofen.y

If you're in a lot of pain there's also tramadol short-term.

Ibuprofen (as it's similar to aspirin) hurts my stomach more than Naproxen but yes, it'll be that probably.

I can't take codeine at all. It gives me stomach cramps, and usually projectile vomiting. This is quite a common reaction apparently, so it may well be that!

However, I also get stomach pain with naproxen!

Both could cause it! If you normally take ibuprofen with no issues, you could try dropping the naproxen and replacing it with ibuprofen to see if it helps your stomach. If nothing improves, try just taking paracetamol with the naproxen instead (cutting out the codeine).

It's all trial and error really! I'm a nightmare and can't take any opiates due to stomach pain and vomiting or naproxen either! But most people can tolerate one or the other. It may be that the combination of both is too much for your stomach.

I hope you feel better and recover quickly!

No omeprazole, but I did have an anti-sickness injection when I came round from the GA. No idea what it was (I wasn't in the mood for asking questions).

Yep naproxen can cause terrible stomach pain. Needs to be taken with food and you should have omeprazole to protect your stomach with it.

Thanks, it's probably the naproxen then, although I have been careful about taking it with food. I'll go onto ibuprofen from now on and see if that helps.

I can't take naproxen as it gives me bad stomach pain. I had to take omeprazole to sort my stomach out after taking it for 3 days
