Does Breast Lump Biopsy hurt?

Ccccchanges · 31/08/2020 11:09

I have an appointment at the breast clinic next week for a small pea-sized lump I’ve found - the GP thinks it’s likely a cyst due to the fact I’m in my 20s, but is sending me to the breast clinic anyway.

I’m going to have an ultrasound, and possibly a biopsy/drainage. I was just wondering if this hurts? I’ve got to ride/muck out my horse in the evening.

I had one a few years ago so memory has faded a bit but I remember it being a bit uncomfortable and not particularly painful. Don't think it was sore afterwards but I cant remember! I was breastfeeding so I guess if it was sore I would remember. Hopefully someone else will be more helpful!

Ccccchanges · 31/08/2020 12:23

@tinkerbellvspredator thank you! Although yours was a while ago that has definitely put my mind at rest Smile

No mine didn’t hurt.

There’s a click noise when they take the sample they didn’t warn me about though.

Truzza · 31/08/2020 12:32

I had it last year, it's not painful just an injection type sting
I'm sure they gave me a local anaesthetic before hand.

The bruising afterwards was 😱 so don't be too worried about it.

Ccccchanges · 31/08/2020 14:54

@TowandaForever @Truzza thanks both, that’s very reassuring....

Not sure about the bruising though ShockConfusedBlush

It not painful I've had a couple, but it can be tender and bruised later on. Try arnica for the bruising and a soft bra.

Elphame · 31/08/2020 16:24

No - it's OK. They give you plenty of local first.

I've had 6 now and never had any bad bruising, it's just been a bit sore and tender for a day or two but not enough to worry about.

Flamingolingo · 31/08/2020 16:31

I’m 34 and have had numerous ultrasounds on my breasts (family history), but never a biopsy. They can tell a lot from the imaging and will only biopsy if they need additional reassurance. Try not to worry, the clinic team are always friendly

Redannie118 · 31/08/2020 20:23

I had one in April. Didnt hurt at all during procedure, and just a little bruised feeling afterwards.

Stinkywizzleteets · 31/08/2020 20:24

Not at all.

Ccccchanges · 31/08/2020 22:18

Thanks everyone for your kind and helpful replies! Flowers

@Flamingolingo - that’s reassuring. I’m expecting just an ultrasound, but thought I should be prepared just in case they need to biopsy Smile

I found it excruciating the first time. Apparently, the cyst was “bouncing around” and after failing to get the needle in it, having chased it around in my breast, the consultant gave up and asked another to have a go.

Next time years later, I insisted on a local anaesthetic and it was a completely different experience - it was fine!

Ccccchanges · 01/09/2020 21:29

@DarkMintChocolate Blush

Glad it went better for you the second time round!

I had an aspiration then went back for a biopsy. It honestly didn't hurt I'm presuming they gave me a local first. Like someone said upthread... its like a staple gun and you hear a load click.
Fingers crossed for you

FelicityBeedle · 01/09/2020 21:36

When my mum had it she was in agony, loads of bruising and a lot of pain (but she’s also a bit of a wimp).
I’m really not trying to scare you just so you can have other plans in place if needed for your horse. I hope you’ll have a much better experience (she had no local as I recall)

paintmegood · 01/09/2020 21:42

I haven't had one on my breast but I've had both aspirations and a biopsy on a neck lump. The aspirations were uncomfortable and the biopsy was a bit painful because it takes longer and there was scraping around to gather cells.

I don't know how this compares to a breast but it wasn't as bad as I imagined.
I have had a mammogram and that was a special kind of torture but is over quickly.

Ccccchanges · 02/09/2020 20:46

@SmartyPants0 thanks! I’m sure all is fine - just silly not to get it checked out Smile

@paintmegood Blush luckily I don’t think they will bother doing a mammogram as I’m fairly young.....

@FelicityBeedle don’t worry! I would much rather have a wealth of experiences and be able to prepare in advance. Hope your mum was ok! Flowers

I had a cyst drained. It was pretty painful while they did it (no local) but over quickly and my breast was a bit bruised and tender after but not enough to get in the way of carrying on as normal.

TheFormidableMrsC · 02/09/2020 20:55

I had four earlier this year. Didn't feel the actual procedure but I hate the click sound! I did bleed very badly afterwards and had to drive from hospital to my GP because i soaked through my top. I was told this was unusual but that I shouldn't have driven. Nobody told me that! I'm sure you'll be fine and agree that ultrasound only is the most likely scenario. Good luck!

Jasmine50 · 02/09/2020 21:00

Yes, it did hurt. And the noise was quite alarming. Like a noisy stapler. The bruising just came out as yellow and not black/blue like a normal bruise. Hope that is useful info.

Howzaboutye · 02/09/2020 21:04

If you don't get a local anaesthetic it will hurt. Like someone has just punctured your breast. Which is exactly what just happened. The click is off-putting too.
Demand local anaesthetic.

MrsIronfoundersson · 02/09/2020 21:04

I had one last year ... local anaesthetic, didn't hurt at all, noisy stapler sound for the biopsy bit. Didn't bruise much, no pain! And a good result a week later. Best wishes OP.

Stinkyjellycat · 02/09/2020 21:07

It didn’t hurt at all when I had it. It was removed with a needle and that also didn’t hurt. Best of luck!

mrsknottschicken · 02/09/2020 21:12

I had a local anaesthetic for mine. It didn’t hurt. The loud click was a bit weird, though! Good luck.

Ccccchanges · 05/09/2020 09:48

Thanks everyone! As I said, I hope I don’t have to have a biopsy, but these responses have been really helpful.

I’ll keep you all updated!
