DS sucks his thumb - it has a blister type thing on the outside now and then a nasty cut thing too on the inside and as it's always in his mouth never heals.....I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do with it but feel guilty that it looks so horrid. Poor little thing.
Any ideas anyone?

its a callous. dd2 had one it got really infected. keep an eye on it. doc was quite concerned.

I used to suck my thumb, as did my older sister who taught me how to do it.

My dad once put plasters over my thumbs to stop me sucking them (it was only my right hand tho that i used to suck) and i've also heard of people using that nail biting stuff too. I used to suck my thumb until i was about 14 - only indoors tho - and i can remember putting the nail biting stuff on my nails, forgetting i'd done it and then sticking my thumb in my gob. Yuk!! You could try either of those two perhaps?

LilBloodRedWantsGore · 05/10/2007 19:25

No personal experience as DD doesn't suck hers, but apparently I did exactly the same to my thumb when I was little. My Mum "cured" me by putting a sticking plaster on my thumb - I didn't like the taste so stopped sucking it.

I'd probably put a bandage round it to stop him getting to it while it heals.

I suppose if I put a plaster on it it might allow that one to heal so that he can perhaps suck his other one for a while? I can imagine him getting a right strop on if I did that though especially as he's teething and a bit poorly at the moment....

Please see the dr. Ds1 had this and it turned into impetigo (think he was about the same age)

He had antibiotics and ointment, and we had to bandaged his thumb up. Hasn't sucked it since and he's 2 /12.
